Well my 4-way focus rails came today (I'll try and get a little review up soon) and apart from easier focussing I was also looking forward to the ability to shift left and right for easier composition. Then it dawned on me, I can use it to make panoramas just like you can by shifting a T/S lens left and right.
The final image is composed of three shots with plenty of overlap, I reckon I could make one with 10+ images but the screwdriver got boring from the right onwards.
One thing I did notice is either the rails have some rotational shift (they seem solid enough, but it may be minor movement that is exaggerated by high magnifications) or the lens has some distortion (despite being an enlarger lens, I thought these things were meant to be relatively distortion free). Now for most subjects I can't see this being much of a problem, but with this particular object it became quite noticeable with the rings going around the screwdriver tip.
I also need to remember to lock my white balance, perhaps I'll start shooting in RAW and learn how to batch process.
