Hey everyone,

From your experience, has a release of updated L series lenses significantly decreased prices on earlier releases?

As per Canon Rumors site, Canon is planning a release of a new super-wide angle lens with IS.

I am in a market for the 17-40mm lens; being a wonderful lens, do you think that its prices are likely to go down by a significant amount once this new lens is unveiled?

Thank you for your input!

I think it's already so low that it'll pretty much stay around 550-650

I have never seen huge drops in older versions, most recently the 70-200 mk2 came out, the mk1's drop slightly but not much, partially I think because canon jacked the base price of a new mk2 so much higher then the mk1's were going for. If the Mk2 had come out near the same price of the mk1(new) I think you would have seen some drop in used mk1's.

The 17-40IS would probably be considerably more expensive than the old model. Considering you can get the old one used for $500, dont expect them to drop much lower until the other model begins to push its way into the used market.

The 70-200 f/2.8 IS didn't go down in price when the II was released (early 2010).

Don't pay much attention to the rumor sites, I've seen things rumored for years that never materialized. I own a 17-40 and won't part with it and I could care less about the used resale value. I don't need IS at that FL range.

the only time i see lenses price drop is when they come out with a new version of exactly the same lenses. For example, back then when the 24-70 f/2.8 came out to replace the 28-70f/2.8, that would be a time when the older lenses drop in price. And also, keep in mind that a mark II or IS version lenses will always be more expensive than a normal version, I can only see such lenses target a different market.

Price does not really go down because the new lens ends up being much more expensive. So the old one is already the cheap alternative at its current price.
