I've been trying to visualise the angle of view of a 135. I'm very impressed with what I've seen from this lens and I'm wondering how much use I could put it to. Would it be any use, for example, at a wedding reception walking around taking pot-shots of people? Or is it too narrow for that?

With your 5D you could definitely do it, I wouldn't recommend it on a crop body though. I just did alot of candid shooting at 2 weddings last month with the 135mm/5DII and got real nice results.

Were you after/getting just head shots, full upper body, or whole body? Can you show here the most extensive view of anyone you took with that combo, and if you can remember say how far you were from the subject? If the lens really will deliver the goods then I'll probably buy it, but it's a lot of money if I find I can't use it. More to the point, by then I'll have lost the opportunity to get something a bit wider, such as an 85mm. I know in theory I can simulate 135mm with my 100-400L, but in practice that's very difficult as 135 isn't marked on the barrel, and for storage I need to retract the lens fully anyway.

Fantastic shots John! Peter, I shoot weddings with a friend of mind and since she's smaller she's usually the one to get upclose to the actions while I stay back and shoot. I used the 70-200L which was great and know that the 135L will replace it just fine for weddings. You just gotta move your feet a bit more ;)

Actually, as a wedding photographer can I ask you another question? I have of course a 5Dc and I'm quite content with it. I'm thinking of getting a second body to keep and use alongside the 5Dc, and from the point of view of weddings and similar scenes would you recommend a 5D2 or a 7D? I'm inclined towards the 7D because of its extra reach for bird shooting, and if I were to buy a 5D2 I'm not sure how much I'd ever use the 5Dc anyway so I'd be inclined to sell it. But just for that specific requirement what do you think?

I prefer the IQ of the 5D2 over the 7D but I'm also more than content with the AF speed of the 5D2 which is a big complaint for most. I haven't had any instances where I felt I need something with quicker or more accurate AF.

If you are content with the 5D's AF then I say the 5Dii is a no brainer. It all comes down to which you do more. Can you shoot birds with a 5Dii? Of course! Can you shoot weddings with a 7D? Sure! For me it came down simply to IQ and I have yet to be fooled on portraits if a shot was taken by a 5Dii or 7D. With that said, I'll probably pick up a 7D as a second body for sports/action shots but that's just myself.

I still don't get a ton of use out of this lens, just the wrong length for me, but always blow away by the sharpness when I get a chance to use it.

Full image, and a 100% crop.

Great shots Alan and John and you're right, it's tack sharp! Here's a few from Hailey's first Christmas shoot today. (I know color selection is a no no but babies look the same to me and the little red bow is an obvious hint)

BTW the bokeh masters kit doesn't work on the 135 :/ at least that well. It was a composite since it wouldn't focus!

This was my favorite shot. Her smile, emotion, bokeh, etc. Man I love my 135L :)
