had a small swell hit today, tide was a bit high and fog was rolling in and out, but I got a few shots that were ok.
This was at big rock.

Back to out of focus... I'll assume you never bought that lens you mentioned.

MMURAD, I think thats a little bigger than a small swell.....Im glad you were able to get some shots. I was tied up with work today. I saw a clip on the news , but the only thing they ever show is the ocean beach pier getting clipped by the waves. I might go out tomorrow, weather pending.

Ya there were some over head sets. I didn't get to back for low tide plus the fog really came in heavy, but I am sure it got better even if you could not see it.
Tomorrow should be good, but unfortunately I have a full day of work.

Mike, I was just checking these out on your Flickr and decided to check the forums to see if you posted them here. It does look like you're back out of focus on these shots. Although I like the first 2 shots with the guys tucking into the tube. The water looks good in both of them.

I tried making it out there after work at about 3:30pm to see if I could get any shots, but the marine layer rolled in pretty thick and visibility was shot. I don't think guys could have seen each other in the lineup! I might try again tomorrow, but I'd really rather be in the water to catch at least some of the swell.

Hey Ron, ya that was a crazy wall of fog that hit the shoreline around 3.

As far as the OOF, I am not sure if it is me or what. It seems really hit or miss. I am going to do some tripod tests this weekend to make sure the lens is dialed in for this body. I have only had this lens 2 days. I bought it off Lightrules here and it looks brand new.

Great shots....I was at wind n sea at from 7-8 am and could barely see a thing. I thought I would get lucky at scripps in the pm but it was also foggy. The swell is fading today but there should be some fun ones out there.

Good stuff, Mike. Perfect lens for this kind of stuff. How about some air shows too :-)

Enjoy!

The right at Big Rock takes you into the "big rock", you could do it, but probably only once. ;)

I like the shots. As a surfer I appreciate what those guys are throwing themselves into. Tough stuff (although a lot easier than Pipe--that place is downright dangerous).

I like the first one the best.

Oddly enough, I never saw Big Rock break in all the years I grew up in San Diego. I'm from Encinitas, which to us (growing up) was a world away from La Jolla. I didn't even surf Windansea or Blacks until I was an adult.

Where I specifically grew up (Leucadia) we never wanted to go anywhere. We had it made right there. If you couldn't get there by bike or skateboard, it wasn't for us. Heck, just one mile made a difference in our world There were the D-Street boys, Stone Steps (that was me), Beacons, Grandview. That was our world.

Everyone went to Swamis, of course, for the big winter surf. That's where I've caught the biggest waves of my life (for the most part). I know Swamis and trust it when the surf is big.

I think you nailed the vibe in these photos. Makes me homesick (I live in Atlanta now, and we haven't had a good swell in all the years I've lived here). ;)

Thank you. bw!

I agree, that wave at Big Rock is not easy to get into. There is a deep channel outside so you don't really see them coming, then they just jack up and dump. Some of the bigger sets it was sucking all the water off the rock and the bowl was wrapping around it. Looked kind of sketchy to me, but some big barrels. The spongers were getting a lot more waves actually.

I grew up in OC and surfed a lot as a kid at Salt Creek and I am just getting to know the surf spots here in San Diego.
