Ok, this is another annoying thread from me:). Here is the case...

You are a traveller, you will go to Europe, Africa, Asia, around the globe for the rest of your life. You fall in love with photography, and your father gave you his 5d mark II. You want to shoot everything, landscape, portrait, candid, sports, products, etc. But you don't have any lens, you have to buy them yourself.

Suddenly.......
Santa come to visit your house and drop $5000 Cash below your pillow, and for many weeks you have been thinking to complete your photography equipment. You will not buy anymore lens (not body:D) for about 5 years. What lens will you buy 1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc.?

Hmmm... for $5k on just lenses eh... should they be light and easy to travel with or just the best of the best?

For convenience...

$1,500 EF 16-35 f2.8 II to have ultra wide to wide covered
$500 Sigma 50 1.4 for a "normal" lens
$2,200 EF 70-200 f2.8 IS II for a telephoto lens
$900 MP-E 65 cause macro is awesome

16-35 2.8L
35 1.4L
50 1.4
70-200 2.8L IS
I'd probably have the 35 1.4L as my main walkaround lens having it on 85% of the time with the rest used as needed. Only real pain in the butt would be the 70-200 but if you're traveling you'll always find the need for the reach.

One thing for sure I will buy the 70-200 II since a LOT of people are praising it.

Hard call. I guess it all depends on your style, but for travel photography (landscapes/architecture) the one lens you can't skip would be the 17L TS-E. I'd probably also get a 35L for walk around, a Sigma 85 f/1.4 for portraits and such and a 70-200L f/4 IS (a great compromise since you might not want to lug around it's overweight brother).
So, 17L TS-E + 35L + S85 f/1.4 + 70-200L f/4 IS for $5.6k.
Or 17L TS-E + 50L + 70-200L f/4 IS for $4.8k

24L - $1600
50L - $1500
135L - $1000
TS-E45 f/2.8 or 8-15L - for shiggles (Might blow the budget a little bit but not by much)

I want Santa to visit me with such a gift :(

Might be able to get this for $5k:

Canon 17-40
Canon 24-70
Canon 35L
Canon 70-200 F/2.8 IS Mk2
2x TC

24-70 could be dropped for Sigma/Tamron alternative plus another goody :)

I would start with one lens, like a 24-70L, then buy more once I figure out what I need / want.

35mm 1.4(night, full body portrait, general purpose, whatever). Ts-E 17mm(landscape, architecture, ect), I wouldn't cover sports unless they wanted more of a burnett style tilt shift sports shot, for which I'd also get a 45mm ts-e. Products can be done with anything really. Maybe a 85mm 1.4 zeiss for more traditional head/shoulders portraiture.

That pretty much does it for me.
