Does the camera record the flash power used ? I want to do some experiments with different diffusers and would like to know this info for my comparison.
Thanks.

Didn't realize you were talking about the on-board flash. Bryan

The EXIF only records a few things relating to the flash such as whether the flash mounted fired, the flash mode and FEC, but nothing about the power level set on the flash manually or via E-TTL. ...Leo

Can't you just set the flash to manual mode and then meter the light going through the different diffusers? ...Leo

I'd like to know what it was thinking, and how much power it had in reserve. Especially when trying different modifiers, and multiple flashes. John Caputo

Get a decent exposure with one of the diffusers, then bracket your exposure around that base reading. Then use exactly the same settings with exactly the same subject/target using the next diffuser, again bracketing around the exposure. Then the same with the next and so on. Compare the results. Just to be clear, when I say bracket, I don't mean auto-bracket. I mean manually add to and detract from the aperture setting. Just make sure everything is the same for each series except for the diffuser.

I shoot manual flash setting often enough, that I have a good idea how to set those up with different modifiers, especially in controlled environments, and in manual modes I know exactly how much power I'm asking out of my speedlites. But, when shooting outdoors, or in odd environments, and using ETTL, I've pushed beyond the limits of the flash. HSS modes come to mind as well. Would be nice to peek at it to see I was close, or at the limits, and if the power was displayed on the back of the camera, I'd find it somewhat useful. Setting up tests, in a controlled environment wouldn't help at all. And, just a curiosity, not highest on my list of feature requests. John Caputo
