What is even cooler is Live View in Simulated Exposure mode. It's extremely accurate, and moving the focus box to identify the subject shows you the effect on exposure. It's the promise of perfect exposure--as long as you are in a situation that permits Live View.

But it's also a taste of what's to come when a good digital viewfinder becomes possible.

Haha, you guys are taking this way too seriously. I'm just saying that the 5DII is a great camera....even in auto mode and it will save me some time post processing some of my shots. Not all but some. I know the importance of shooting in RAW for obtaining the best possible image and I will continue to use it when needed. My point is that the 5DII is amazing for the quick and easy shooting when you need it. I am very impressed with this camera and its capabilities.

I wonder if a "post your best 'green box' shots" thread would have any contributors...

Sounds like an early symptom of new camera syndrome.

Week 1: magic and rainbows (omfg awesome!)
Week 2: buyer's remorse (black dots, AF issues, squeaky doors, pattern noise, etc., etc.)

Why buy an SLR when all you use is Auto? Ah yes, I forgot... better glass and larger sensor.

Yes, Auto is OK when you need a quick snap for whatever reason - or when you hand the camera to someone who doesn't know how to use manual/semi-manual modes.
But else - strive for manual/semi-manual for your photographs and use Auto only for snapshots.
On that note though - you know there is "creative auto"? :) that might be better than auto if you were a beginner - but I guess you are not from your post.

Personally, I'd like to see a shot or two from a 5Dii in 'auto.' Can you post any?

dave

You know, a post of a "good 5D2 Auto shot" would probably look very similar to a "good 7D Auto shot" or a "good 5D Classic Auto shot", both of which you could provide -- could we tell the difference:)?

What might actually be interesting is if a number of people took on a project of doing some shoots in Auto only, then posting examples of both the Best and the Worst, then giving out their keeper rate for them with that particular camera with a description of the particular scenarios and the challenges they faced.

Now with that kind of thread people could actually start to get an idea of whether one model, say the 5D2, was superior to the other models in Auto Mode performance. Granted, though, we are only talking about some characteristics of shooting, Exposure and focus performance in Auto mode, but it could actually be quite informative for anything who considers Auto mode as a consideration for a camera.

I don't think I've ever used a dSLR in Auto...not even my first one. I'm basically in Manual most of the time these days but I have to say, for the few shots I have taken with the 7D in Av mode and no compensation on my part, the metering seems to be much improved over the 40D/5D/5DII.

I'd like those using the cameras meter to explain the difference between manual or any of the program modes.

I put mine in full auto when I give it to my wife to use. I also use full auto with flash when leaving the camera around for my family grab and shoot. (My kids are grown up and the cameras stay out of the reach of the grandkids.)
