Hello, I have just been given a canon 5d (the classic), without any software. I do have a Canon 50D with EOS utilities installed on my computer. however, when I try to connect the canon 5d there is no recognition. I am running Windows 7 home premium, 64 bit op. system. An error message came up saying no driver found, software not successfully installed. I have no software apart from the software for my 50D - any help would be SO appreciated...

Go the Caon website and try a recent version specifically for Windows 7

There are NO drivers for the 5D for windows 7.
That is a big problem for older cameras using a new windows operating system.

Funny, I'm running windows 7 and my 5D classic and my Xti both work fine with EOS utility. At least as far as recognizing the camera goes. I stopped using EOS utility for downloading files cause it was crashing in the middle of downloads. That was with Vista but it seems to work fine in Windows 7.

I think its the "64-bit" thats a problem. I'm running 32-bit and I seem to remember reading that the Canon software doesn't support 64-bit OS.

64bit systems can also run 32bit software, it just installs in a second Program Files folder
Program Files (x86) so if canon don't do 64bit the 32bit version will do just fine.

when you browse for Canon software its asks what device you want the software for then what OS, I'd be amazed if the downloaded software for the correct OS and Camera combination, wouldn't solve the issue.

If you're just looking to import your images, get a card reader, it's faster. Otherwise, try changing the communication setting in-camera.

As I understand it the 5D (Classic) needs a WIA driver which can be downloaded from Canon's website for Windows versions prior to Windows 7 (likewise EOS Utility), so I'm guessing Canon are no longer supporting the 5D Classic as fas as Windows version are concerned. However, if WaltA is successfully using his 5D with Windows 7 it might be worth downloading the WIA driver for an earlier version of Windows (XP, Vista?) and seeing what happens. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.........

Yeah, I agree. I've always done clean installs - never upgraded the OS so I don't think there is any old WIA drivers on my system.

I just go into the canon site and put xTi as my camera (its newer than the 5D so may be supported longer) and Win7 as my OS and all the software works for both cameras.

I've found the whole EOS Utility app has been pretty unstable starting with Vista. I try to stay away from it and use a card reader. Glad I don't have to shoot tethered or anything that requires it to work regularly.

Change the camera communication mode to "Print/PTP" in the menu system (not "PC," which is otherwise the logical choice), then connect it via the USB cable. It'll show up as a drive that way and will transfer files just fine.

many thanks, I'll look into other options but right now the card reader solution is working so I'm up and running!
