After 18 months my 40D has a 'failed main board' with a £325 repair fee. I am thinking should I get a new/used 40D, a 50D, 60D or 7D etc. I take mainly travel photography and family / friends / candid people shots.

Thanks - that's my worry if I get the repair done. When I chose the 40D I looked hard at the 50 and decided against it. I don't know much about the 7D

I would PASS on the 60D since you have used the larger 40D body already. Canon: 7D (2, 1 gripped), 50D gripped, 500 f/4L IS, 100-400 L IS, 70-200 f/4L IS, 28-135 IS, 10-22, 15-85 IS, 1.4x II, 580EX
