Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8

I just got mine off ebay from a sketchy seller. its front focusing element was loose and it was full of dust. i see your ring cover is already off exposing the three screws holding the glass on. Dont be afraid to pull it apart and lift the front glass off the lens, it just sits there on its own mount. Theres no calibration needed when you put it back together. Its an easy fix, get some good small screwdrivers and pull it apart, clean it out and put the lens back together. Easy fix. No calibration needed.

definitely worth a try, as it sits its worth garbage, repair is same whether u try it first or send it in.
and if you fix it then u can feel better about selling it for more money.

Thanks guys for the responses. I was really wondering about the front element and how it was held in there. I was quoted at $155 to fix / clean / re-calibrate from Tamron, so i shall give it a try myself, then go from there!

Adobe Camera Raw 6.2 (came with Photoshop CS5, and I think is in Lightroom as well) can automatically correct images for lens aberrations, including the Tamron 17-50mm. It can do that to the whole batch of images, in one step. It also does many other lenses.

BTW... what is a good way to check my lens for any problems? I guess I can find that front-backfocusing testing chart somewhere on the internet. Any other things to look for? I guess I have 3 days to return if anything is wrong.
Also my lens says it is made in Japan. This is good, isn't it? Compared to the other which are made in China? Or some other country, I can't recall...

I've had this lens for a while now (over two years), but lately, the 11-16, 28 1.8 and 35 macro have all been on the winning side of competing with it for camera time... My lunchbreak with winter landscape was a good moment to get it back in the saddle

A good way to test new lenses you've bought imo.
Just remember to shoot in good light and compare against other lenses for a proper comparison.
As I said before in this thread the first two copies of this lens that I bought weren't focussing correctly so I'd recommend doing this test at your earliest convenience.

I will do it as soon as I get to a printer...

You better check the lens for front/back focusing. With your camera, you can't do AF micro-adjust. I just calibrated my Rebel XS and Canoin 135L, focus is spot on, but the Tamron (which I sent before to their service center, but they said it is within their specs) is still front-focusing. I actually developed a little of theory about how phase detection AF works, and it looks like I should be able to fix the front focusing by adding a shim between the lens and its mount.
