The coloring is similar to the 70-200 MKII, which is slightly more white and less creme than the 300 you have pictured. I suspect the II's of the 400, 500, 600, etc are all the whiter color too.

Actually the 1.4x II is already pretty good and I never had any complaints using it on my 600mm. The 2.0x II is a different story though, and that is really where there is a real problem. It is basically unusable on the 600mm. I am hoping that the 2.0x III will magically "fix" the problem but am doubtful it is possible.

Following will be my small trial, lenses used 70-200mm 2.8 IS MK II, 300mm 2.8 IS and 400mm 2.8 IS. Not really good test but just for some idea.

All done by 5D MK II tripod used

1st compare 70-200 + 1.4 MK III (280mm) vs. 300mm

1/200 ISO 1600 f4

By the way I've got some issue with 400mm lens + 2x Ext MK III, I couldn't auto focus......... with 5D Mark II or 1D Mark IV, not sure why.... and when I put Ext on the 400 lens I can still use f2.8 ........ >_<!! I believe something wrong with computer etc...

Anyone face same issue?

Here is 400 + 1.4x III

For me I am happy about the results (eg. 70-700 + Exts vs. 300mm or 400mm lenses)

Because I don't have Mark II Ext, therefore I couldn't compare it...

Got mine last night. Totally and pleasantly surprised it is exactly the same color as my 70-200 II. Not the new whiter color.

Edit: After looking it in natural light, the 1.4x III does have a lighter shade than the 70-200 II.

Compare to my 70-200 II, the new Ext still different color, the 70-200 II more closer to current big white lenses.

What images are you guys looking at?
Look at the text on the fire hydrants.. I mean ,. you can;t see that?
Imagine the extra detail that translates to with finer detail on bird feathers etc..
If the two fire hydrants are truly indicative fo the improvement one will get, then the new TCs are a GIANT LEAP forward?

If you can't see this, then IMHO you may not really have any real interest in these TCs.

Not sure it's worth $270 more than the II version

Am I the only one who is a bit underwhelmed by the new TC's? They cost freaken $500, and they don't seem that much better than options already available for FAR less money.

lannes wrote in post #11505325 (external link)
+1 totally over the hype as well, I would say the extra performance would only be available with the new telephotos.

Omewilli, thanks for the photo's, I'd say the 2 tc's are very similar especially if images are the same size, also I notice in the exif that one photo states a focal length of 265mm and the other 280mm.
