Yes, however like I mentioned above, I'm holding my expectations for myself higher than he is.

Well, based on his expectations, is 35 wide enough?

So, will a wider lens help you hold your expectations higher than the primary shooter's expectations of his secondary shooter and still satisfy his expectations?

Yes, of course it would, but remember this is a situation of me balancing my debt. I do realize that the 17-40 would get used at a wedding. I'm just trying to figure out if my 35l will work for me for now until I can truly afford the lens. I could probably live with myself for missing a couple wide grand congregation shots, but not group, or people shots.

Depending on the setting and available space, I'd think a 35 might be too wide for groups - you'll get some perspective distortion on the sides.

OP - My advice would be to rent (or borrow) a 24-70 f/2.8 and shoot the wedding with that. Once you get home, upload the images and use Lightroom to read the exif and see which focal length you used the most. Decide from there; you may find that you stick around one focal length and that would be the lens for you. I find I hover around 24mm, so my next purchase will be a 24mm f/1.4.
The other thing you may find is that the 24-70 f/2.4 may be the perfect lens for you!

I've had the 24-70, and while a great lens, it just wasn't for me. My lens of choice right now is the 35L. I really like the focal length. I have not really put my 85L to test yet, but from what I have seen from it so far, it's a great lens, very sharp. I think I will be ok with the lenses I have now. I am sure after my first wedding I will find out if I need to alter my lens kit or just add to it. For now I am just going to keep an eye out for a decent deal on a nice 17-40 for the really wide large shots.
