I currently have a 5D MkI and love it. Now, that being said, I was thinking of getting the 5D MKII. I mostly shoot weddings and portraits, and figured for the new year, I would indulge in the MKII. I normally carry a xxD as a back up.

A friend is in a bit of trouble and offered me his 7D at a really, really good price. Which camera combo would you guys choose? I was saving the money to buy a 5D MKII, but would have the sell my original MKI to do it. Here are my scenerios

1 - 5D MKI and 7D
2 - 5D MKII and xxD (20D/30D as this is all I may be able to afford)

I'm happy with my glass, and usually rent what I need. So, just some extra input would be nice. Thanks again, and Happy New Year to everyone.

It depends, if you add the 7d to the 5d, how much use will you get out of the 7d? I guess, how much use do you get out of your 30/40d now? If you mainly use the 5d, and only use the 30/40d occasionally, then I think I would go with the MKII. If you think you may start to use the 7d as much or maybe more than the 5d, then I'd go with the 7d. Having just added a Mark II to my 5D Mark I, I personally vote for the Mark II. It's a great camera and for me it's definitely an increase in features over my classic. If I were to find the need for a crop down the road I would pick up a used 40d as they are getting cheaper and cheaper, and are still awesome cameras....just my 2 cents....good luck with your decision....

I guess another way of looking at it, would be in a perfect world if you could have both the Mark II and the 7d, which would you use more? Go with that one!

Why not keep the 5D1 as your back-up, get the Mk2 and sell your xxD?

Good Point. I mainly use my 5D....the crop is just a backup I have on my shoulder for just in case....hmm...

I may grab the 7D, and then sell my 5D and 7D and move to the 5D MKII. I think you're right, I would probably grab my 5D first for most stuff.

Thanks for your input!

Take a look at your lenses too. What's a better match for your primary lenses?

Basically I was going to sell my 5D and use my christmas cash to get the 5D MKII, but when my friend offered me the deal, I figured why not. He's okay with me selling it for more, he's just needing the money now, and would rather have me take advantage of the deal.

So, I wouldn't be able to keep the 5D MKI and buy the 5D MKII.

5D MKIII would probably be out of my budget, but may make the MKII a bit cheaper for me. I'm thinking that the MKIII may not come out till the fall...i'd like it for the upcoming wedding season...

If you want an easy straight forward response, this is not the place. Things get nuanced to death here.

If you want a straight answer, go with the 5DII and the 40D.

Yeah. I think that's the general consensus. I'll play with the 7d over the week, and then put the cameras up for sale and get the 5d mk2.

If you can afford a 5D Mk I and 7D, why not just go with 2 5D Mk I's?

Also, why do you have both a Canon 70-200 f/2.8 AND a Sigma 70-200 f/2.8 ?

If you were to sell one you might be able to afford a 5D Mk II amd 5D Mk I.
