Hi all,
This is my first post here, being a long time Nikon user.
I now have a Canon 7D and 24-105.

After using my D700/D3, the Canon 7D seems, to me, to have a very "odd" shutter sound. Its not a firm CLICK or a "solid" sound, it's much softer and "hollow"..? Is this normal?

Enjoy your camera. Hope you've not encountered any mystical "AF issues" yet. :p

Yeah. It feels "muffled," not the authoritative *clack* one might expect. But on the bright side, it doesn't seem as loud, and it still sings at 8fps.

The 40D that I used to have sounded more like a slap.

Lenses, perhaps? Or less fussy camera names / boxes?

Hi
mark1992, Julian and crayzie418,
Thanks for your super quick replies and your warm welcome...Mark - "mystical AF issues"..??? LOL
I used Nikon for many years from the 12-24 to the 300 2.8 VR, D700/D3 and a bunch of other stuff..Gitzo, Wimberley...etc.

Why Canon?
I got "furloughed" and all the stuff HAD to go (the order came from the "Final Authority"..hahaha)
I used a Leica D-Lux 4 and a Canon G10 for a bit, but had to have a DSLR. Never had a Canon, so I thought, maybe its time to switch! Besides, I used a friend's 50D and the jpegs out of the camera were lovely..bright, contrasty, vivid and sharp as hell, whereas my D700 had anaemic looking images straight out of the camera and most of the time I had very little time to post process! so 7D, it was.

Maaa-aaany people have been experiencing AF issues with the 7D, although most of us - those without them - have been saying that it's user-error. They deny it of course.

AF on my 7D's perfectly fine, and I'm loving it. I'm certain that you will too. It's all the camera I'll ever need. As Julian once mentioned, the next and possibly only upgrade will be to full frame. :)

Agreed with the shutter sound by the way. I like the mechanical "clacking" created by previous bodies 5D, 40D, etc. but the 7D is a bit muffled. But still better than the Nikon shutter sound which sounds a bit synthetic to me. But I am not a Canon devotee either I have contemplated the D700 myself. The ergonomics and price are the limiting factor for me, along with overly aggressive NR in body.

Pfff. I'm going to be the first to pre-order the 7D2 once announced. Because I'm all about incremental upgrades.

I like the shutter sound now, but at first I didn't, thought it sounded funny, like "cluck-cluck". Now I know it is all the other bodies that sound funny.
