I still don't understand what you don't like about your 50L.. you failed to specifically tells us what you don't like about it. Are you talking about AF accuracy???

I think it's the focal length that doesn't work for him...

I myself used a 50 1.4 when I first started out. I used it for everything and I really liked it, however I found myself standing way back whenever I was shooting indoors such as houses, or parties. I bought the 35L and sold the 50, and don't regret it one bit. I feel like the 35 does everything my 50 did and more. I just have to get a little closer for portrait type stuff, which I do a lot of with kids. I found kids tend to look into the camera better when it's closer. As for the IQ between the 35L and 50 1.4, as assumed the 35L is better. As for the IQ between the 35L and 50L, I can't speak to. I have a really good friend who has the 50 1.2 glued to his camera, so it's truley different strokes for different folks. I myself believe that finding the right focal length/s that work for you should be the first step, then find that right lens that has the features you need ie. zoom/speed....Just my 2 cents....

Yes, as the other Jake said... its just to close for most the situations I find myself in.
There is absolutely no issues with the performance of the lens, like I said it is perfection. Idk what to do now, but I guess the Tamron will have to do some more work either way.

The 50L's bokeh blows away the 35L

In comparison the 35L seems like a crappy zoom lens

That said, the 35L blows away the 50L when it comes to sharpness

Get out the torches and pitchforks, folks, someone is dissing the 35L!! :p

Granted, I've never had first hand experience of the 50L and I'm sure it's an excellent lens, but I don't think 90%+ of 35L owners would call the lens' bokeh as "crappy zoom lens". I sure wouldn't.

The 35L is my favorite lens hands down. If the 35L was weather sealed, I would never remove it from a 5DII body. It really might be the angle of view the 50 gives vs the 35 on a full frame. Indoors, 50 can be tight. I like the 35L because I can get closer for a portrait and still have a little environment on the side.

You should rent the 35L and try them back to back before you make any moves.

Lensrentals.com is great for rentals, and awesome prices. Make sure you calibrate your autofocus for front or back focus with both lenses though before testing. It makes a HUGE difference.

I almost never use a 50 if I have a 35 with me. Very rarely. 35 & 85 would be a much more useful combination if you want to go fast primes. In fact if Canon made a 35-85 F/2 zoom I don't think I would ever use any other lens aside from the 24TS-E.

Ok, I have my 50L which was purchased brand new a few days before Christmas... and since then I've used it maybe 5 times! I drooled over this lens for so long and now I'm somewhat disappointed.

Don't get me wrong, this lens is amazing! The quality and pictures it produces are absolutely phenomenal.

I plan on doing weddings, engagements and dabble in studio work such as band promos and simple newborn/family photos and my issue here is the space I have to work with.

Which (iyho of course) would be the better work horse? Or did I miss the nail head completely? Other options maybe?

Any input is appreciated!

I'm a 35L owner and don't own the 50L, so I don't have a vested interest or hidden agenda in the 35L.

Yes in comparison the 35L's bokeh looks shizenhousen, or should I say, background diffusion, as in some tests of mine the 35L has nicer bokeh than the 85L. It's all subjective.

I never had any pull towards the 50L. I loved the 50mm FL but wanted/needed a prime on the wide end and didn't like the distortion of the 24Lii so the 35L fit in perfectly. I sold my 50 1.4 to help fund it actually and I don't regret it one bit.

I felt like the 50 was either too short or too long in most situations when shooting indoors like a wedding but can already tell that 35mm will fit perfectly. i'd say give the 35L a go if you haven't already decided to.

Dude! Spot on! That's exactly how I feel!

Every shoot I've done (very few) I have felt that 50 just wasn't what I needed though the bokeh and everything else about the photos the 50 fl's had to offer was amazing, it just doesn't fit what I need.

I'm sold. 35L for sure. I got to fondle one today, and I'm in love.

Next stop, 85!

The grass is always greener on the other side

I feel that 35L is too long for wide angle, and too short for portraits. It's in no man's land. Jack of all trades, master of none.
