We had a good waist-shoulder high swell hit us for a couple days between the heavy rains in San Diego. I took the opportunity to shoot surf to test out my new 400/5.6L + 7D combo. I had the lens mounted to a monopod with ball head. This was the first day of the swell with the wave a little smaller. I put the camera down on the 2nd day and paddled out before the rains hit us again. :)

There first 3 are a series of one turn that I thought was really cool. I cleaned the image up in post to remove some noise and cropped in a little to frame the pics better.

I tried to get creative in LR3 with these next three images. I'm torn between wanting to make just the surfer pop or creating a balance between the surfer and the wave.

Please CC. Let me know what I could do better. I've got a few more pics from that day that I'll have posted later.

Nice.. I like the last pic with the aqua marine water. I was at Carlsbad yesterday and the water was coffee brown.. not so attractive for taking ocean pictures..

Thanks! The water in SD needs to clean up a little more. It doesn't help that we've been getting poured on by rain for the past few weeks!

Nice set....i took a peak at Scripps after work and it looked really fun. I was bummed I didn't have either camera or board with me.

How do you like the new lens?

Thanks everyone!

I think the 400mm focal length is perfect for most spots in SD. I'm loving the prime over the 100-400 zoom. I think it just beats out the zoom in IQ and AF is really fast. The shots I've been getting with the lens are on par if not better IQ than the 200/2.8II I was using before. The biggest difference is the less cropping I have to do in PP. I think I took close to 400 click in this session alone with a lot of sequences. I need to take some time and get back to those edits so I can post more pictures from the shoot.

The biggest issue I'm having with the lens is that I'm not using it enough. It's been raining too much in SD and the surf hasn't been doing it's thing to make me want to go out and shoot. I'd really like to shoot with it in 10'+ surf...just waiting for the winter to wake up.

I went out to Scripps this morning. It was clean, but inconsistent and a little smaller than I expected. The swell should pick up throughout the day.
