Lord- these are all insanely good as usual! I can't believe you can get an 11 stack focus hand-held! You're work has been really making me consider the MPE-65 lens. Which leads to a question I've had for all of you with this lens.. Do you absolutely need to use flash to "freeze" motion at this magnification or how fast of a shutter speed do you need to keep things sharp?

Dane - 2 things with using flash with MPE-65. It obviously helps freeze any motion especially if you are shooting hand held. Secondly when shooting above 1:1 light is rather hard to come by.
Having said that you can take lovely natural light shots with the MPE-65 with a stabilised camera system (tripod/bean bag etc) and a very still subject with rather long exposure times.
eg Remy in Spain takes lots of beautiful natural light shots with his MPE-65 by shooting fairly early in the morning (cold bugs and still air) and using either a tripod or bean bag supports with a remote.

I think technically for a purely hand held shot the shutter speed needed is the inverse of something like - 65 *crop factor * (1+M)*(1+M) where M is the magnification so around 1/3500 for a purely handheld shot at 5:1. In most cases you find someway of helping to stabilise the handheld system (resting the lens on something , stabilsing yourself etc) which would reduce this figure.
