Hi, I've recently become the proud owner of an S95 and was wondering if a screen protector would be necessary as I've heard that the screen itself is incredibly durable and pretty hard to scratch or mark?

Much appreciate your opinions, thanks, Glyn.

I use one from Ebay seller DCMugen and I've been very happy with it. It was only a couple of bucks for 2 of them and doesn't interfere with the image quality so it doesn't hurt to have it on there. I wanted to get one from Zagg (invisible shield) as I have been very happy with their products in the past, but they don't even make one for the S95. They do, however, make one for the S90, but the screen dimmensions are not the same even though they have the same viewable area.

I think I read somewhere that the screen is some sort of glass?

It will eventually scratch. get a cheap laptop screen protector from China on ebay... they go for a few bucks only. Measure and cut to size. It will last years and you'll be able to cover a dozen small devices

I'm one who puts on the glass protectors. I had a Giottos on my Rebel and a (ugh i forgot that other brand) on my 7D. THe Giottos shattered somehow once. I think I probably kicked my rebel, but it looked like a point impact. I wonder what I did to my carryon bag....

Anyway, the Rebel XSi one fits PERFECTLY on the S95. I found out that the standard 3" one doesn't fit the S95 as the S95 has a couple edges on the screen. So some blog said that the XSI protector (the same one I used on my T1i) works on the S95. I bought it off the Giottos site and I got it a few days ago.

Make sure you power on your S95 and have an image in the display. There's black borders as the plastic screen is bigger than the display itself. Thus you want to make sure your glass protector doesn't cover up essential areas as there is a border on the protector itself.

The glass protectors block glare and UV and make the contrast very nice. Glass is very unscratchable much like the Gorilla glass of an iPhone. I highly recommend it.

The only worry is shatter but Schott glass which Giottos uses is very hard. We use it in labs for chemicals and such too. I was a bit turned off after my Rebel protector cracked but the cheaper version I have on my 7D has been holding up fine for 6 months now.

This was a huge leap of faith after hearing the standard 3" protector does not fit the S95 well on DPreview. Then I stumbled on some random blog mentioning the SP8306 protector for the S95.... I took a leap of faith based on a sentence worth of info. It worked out :)

so a screen protector for the XSi covers all the way to the edge of the S95? I got one for a S90 but I still have 1/4" showing around the edges

It will eventually scratch.

Why?

I hope you are right! I just ordered the Giottos SP8306 on that advice. I just took delivery of the camera but it's still in its box awaiting the imminent arrival of the Franiec grip for it.

Because no one is perfect? Just like a cheap watch "crystal", you will eventually get micro scratches on the screen, no matter how careful you are.

Seems like a waste investing $30 in a protector that can be remedied just as effectively with a $1 screen protector. I've tried both Giottos and schott glass protectors, and they're nothing special. It's a way to suck money out of individuals who aren't willing to compromise... I've got one of those cheap custom-cut protectors on my S95 even now--I probably spent about $0.20 on it.

I've owned four P&S and three dSLRs since 2001, and have never felt the need for an LCD protector. You don't need to have OCD to maintain a pristine screen - just a modicum of common sense. I've dinged a screen once in 10 years - a superficial scratch that in no way inhibited my chimping. The LCD screen is not crucial to the picture-taking process; scratches may, however, affect resale value. If that's important to you.
YMMV

I tried those on my other pocket Canon. I so loathe the bubbles.

Lol, I just buy the replacement LCD screen covers from Canon. For my wife's A590IS, they cost 5.09 each. At that price, who cares? It's not twenty cents, but it's not $30.

These are cheap and work great, no bubbles... easy on off. My first attempt had a speck of dust, I pulled back the edge and used a piece off scotch tape to pull the speck off the protector put it back down and now it lays perfect. It doesn't use adhesive but static.

I need to get one for the s95 still but I use the thin static sheet covers on my other cameras. I'm impressed how far the the little flexible screen protectors have come since the last time I used one years ago. I've just gotten the cheap ones on ebay and they still go on very clean without bubbles and they're hardly visible once they're on there.
I was never one for putting protectors on laptops, palm pilot, kindle, ipod, etc but it just seems like a good idea with cameras that I'm carrying around all the time just as a precaution
