Great winged captures!

Thanks Jake. It takes a lot of persisting to get the sharp flying shots...I'm hoping the 5D3 has a much better AF system! I use manual focus most of the time now and it works okay most of the time...maybe I'm not as quick as I was!

Well, you have done great with those captures. I myself was thinking of waiting for the 5d3 as well, but went with the 5d2. For one, I hate waiting, and I am actually glad I did as my guess would be that the 5d3 may come late in the year. I bet it will be a great camera though. I have also recently experimented with some manual focusing. It definitely makes things a little more challening, and fun too....keep up the great work!!!

Hi all,

Well, with the rumored price increases now being validated by multiple reputable news outlets, it's time for me to purchase a telephoto sooner than later. I'm debating between this lens and the non-IS version. Would anyone be able to tell me if there is a difference in focusing speed in AI-servo mode between the two lenses?

Thanks for your help!

Hi Adam, I can't cast any light on the difference in AF speed between this and the non IS version, but I believe that I have read that the two are different optically...the non IS is an older formulation and not as sharp.

Can't guarantee that, but someone else may be able to verify it. All I can say is that this lens is one that lives up to it's reputation, and the IS really works.

I would pay the extra and go with IS. Cheers:D

Just picked this baby up tonight! Here's a quick snapshot of my 17-55 using my new 70-200! This lens is sharp!

Got a used one last week. Nice. I like how easily it goes under 1/50 sec at any focal length.

First real cloudy day in about 8 months....not white puffy clouds, but real clouds. It even sprinkled for about 5 minutes!

Curious

An Afghan Man eyes our patrol as he is collecting up scraps of wood to heat his home that night. Since their aren't any crops growing in this season, most of the men just collect firewood to stay warm and live off of whatever they happened to hold on to from the summer.

An Afghan Policeman makes dinner for himself and his comrades. We got this school totally fixed up, painted all the walls nice and white, and of course, the ANP go and put their kitchen back up against the wall and make a nice big black soot patch on the brand new white wall....

Enjoying his few seconds of fame, a kid taking a break from helping to collect firewood himself. I wonder how long that jacket has been passed around his family.

Passing Time

This elder is doing just that, passing the time until call to prayer. He sat there for a couple hours, just waiting. As soon as call to prayer came out he got up and went away, in the meantime I got this shot shooting from the hip. (just couldn't find a spot where he wasn't going to notice me taking his picture, and had this particular framing.) Not only is he passing time, but I felt that he represented the passage of time himself.

Once again this lens puts out in poor light conditions very well. Some of these wouldn't have been possible without the IS, and the ability to open up to f4 and not worry about sharpness, light falloff, etc. While I may not have been paid for any of my photographs yet, I still think this lens has paid for itself in fun.

There are some more from this day on my FLICKR (in my sig), these are my fave 5, but there are some good ones in there as well. All shot with the 70-200 f4L IS.

Thanks for looking!

yeah I missed the boat. I tried to buy it friday before the rebates ended and adorama had problems with bill me later so I couldn't order it. Went to get it today and it's up to $1249. I lost $119 in a week. Oh well, now I just have to save a bit longer to get the TC to go with it.
