OK....... 3 - 4 shot bursts are one thing. I have seen guys at some of my softball games rattle off 15 shots or more until the buffer is full

3-4 in a burst is where the 10FPS cams shine IMHO! It can make the difference between facial expressions, eyes open or closed, even surviving that miss-focused frame while still being able to get the (sort of) peak action in the before or after frame.

Let’s talk cycling gym lights! This shot was after a lot of post. Fortunately I shot RAW. Still there is a color shift from one side of the frame to the other. There was good light at this meet because of the number of lights in the gym. Unfortunately they were all these crazy cycling pots packed closely together and you got the effects of one or more lights (at different color shifts) in a single frame...

Wow, that's a great shot obtained with the help of burst.

Looks like typical gym lighting. Only way to get around that is to shoot RAW ( as you did) and adjust them individually for skin tone and let the background go where ever.

In my experience, the split jumps are easy with a two shot burst ( assuming you study the gymnast's routine and can anticipate). More dramatic if you can shoot at a small angle off the axis of the beam, and get their chest/face in focus rather than their leading/trailing foot and have their eyes open.

Ah yes... the famous gym light cycles. Shoot a white card reference (or three) and shoot raw and adjust in post. Lots of work, but it is what it is. I actually thought about taping a sheet of paper to the wall behind my subject and keep it in the frame while i shot...and using that directly in the photo as the reference :)

I had to teach a small group of folks on lighting and rattle dof a series in my basement under some fluorescent to explain the cycling. Some folks didn't believe me! :)

I think we are saying the same thing.... I use the FPS to fine tune what I hope is a well timed shot. Not as a crutch for lack of planning or understanding of the sport.

Looks like a very well-timed shot there, Randy. Was this a one-shot sequence or was this caught with a short burst?

A few from this morning's meet. Decent light for a change.

Beam was with the 135, floor was the 70-200. All were 3200 1/400 f/2.8.

A few from this afternoon. These are level 10's competing for a spot in the Nastia Liukin Cup during the Flipfest Invitational in Knoxville, TN. All were shot at f2.8, ISO3200, and 500 shutter speed, and post processed w/ LR3.

The non-gymnastics people (myself included) might be interested to know the flash setup(s) that you can get away with in gymnastics, especially on beams etc. I'd be afraid I'd end up with the person being shop landing awkwardly in those events. I flash football most of the time but can't imagine doing it during gymnastics.

Ooo sorry I didn't reply. No flash during competitions. I shoot portraits for this gym and the owners allow me to shoot action shots if the gymnast requests. I also shoot some images for their web site and brochures as incentive to keep me coming back (in addition to a generous donation to the booster club). Doesn't hurt that my daughter is a senior, level 10 and in her final season of 8 at this gym. :)

These were shot with a 430EX on camera flash maximizing shutter speed and manual flash adjustment. I can dig up the EXIF if that will help...
