Prime for me because it fits my style and the way I shoot . This is pure personal preference.

You?

Zoom for me.

I miss too many shots already. I don't want to see a shot and find myself too close/too far.

I use a zoom as my walk around. The flexibility it gives me fits my shooting style best.

As much as I love shooting primes I'm missing shots as well. Currently looking for a mid range affordable zoom..

It's not that simple ;) They both have their place. Zoom for me as a "walk-around-lens" in broad daylight, Fast Prime as a "walk-around-lens" for evenings or night time.

Zoom for me as a "walk-around-lens" when I'm in a photographer friendly environment, Compact Prime as a "walk-around-lens" when I don't want to attract too much attention :)

My favorite street lens is the 28mm f/1.8, but I've used all kinds of lenses for this purpose; 70-200 f/2.8 IS, 300 f/4 IS, 18-50 f/2.8 DC Macro, Sigma 30 and 50 f/1.4, Canon 50 f/1.4, 135L, 85 f/1.8, 35L, 24LII (briefly), 28-135 IS, and the lowly 50 f/1.8 II. I'm looking at using the 16-35L and 85mm f/1.8 combo in the near future, although the 16-35 is a little big for street for my tastes. Hopefully its versatility will win me over ;) .

To answer your question, both. But I usually prefer primes.

For walk around, you really don't know what you are going to come accross, so I voted for zoom. 24-105 works really well for walk around, IMO.

Depends which camera I'm carrying. If it's the 5D or 1D3 then it'll be a zoom. If it's the EP-1 then it'll be a prime.

Zoom for me in the main, but there is something kinda nice about going out with one prime and seeing what you can get with it - sometimes the challenges force some extra creative thinking to get over, which can be worthwhile...

Turns out a gripped 7D + 622 + 580exII + 70-200 2.8 IS MK2 is BLOODY HEAVY! Who knew?!!

While I am by no means a "photo professional," I carry around a 10-24mm in my LowePro 202AW with my 18-135mm on my T2i or vice-versa. This way I have the capability to capture 'most' images fairly easily.

Is my configuration optimal? Most likely not, but for now, it works for me. Down the road, when I have a few more $'s in the bank and can afford to have the 'dream setup'...who knows what I'll do. :D

Me too. The 24-105 seems to be the workhorse for walkaround use...

Yes, even on a (gasp) CROP!;)

Several times I got nice pictures "by mistake", because I have the prime on my camera and nothing else... If I had the zoom maybe I could do something different, which does not always translate into something better.

By the way I didn't answer... If I can't change lenses I will say zoom. In low light I will always choose a prime
