Looking to replace the 18-55mm kit lens that came with the 450D. The only other lens I have is the 50mm f/1.8.

Looking for a better image quality lens. Ideally, want something with a similar zoom range (or even wider if price permits), mostly for landscape-type work. I may go for the Canon 55-250mm IS as another lens at some future stage, but not right now.

£250 is max. New preferred.

Recommendations appreciated.

If your kit lens is the non-IS 18-55, you will gain a lot of image quality from upgrading to the 18-55 IS. The 18-55 IS is the zoom equivalent of the nifty fifty, in terms of price/performance and optical quality/build quality. Zoom range and build quality are the same as the non-IS version, but it's optically superior and has IS.

But if you already have the 18-55 IS version, then there really isn't any standard zoom in your price range that is an upgrade in terms of IQ. To get a better overall lens (build and optically), you need to make a big price jump to Canon's 15-85, 17-55 or Sigma or Tamron's 17-50 or 17-70 offerings, all over the £400 mark.

I got a 2nd hand Sigma 17-70 OS and I love it. Such an improvement over the 18-55!

if you prefer new then you're going to have a problem!
You might want to raise your budget and look at the Tamron 17-50, Sigma 18-50, etc.

Best price i've seen for that is £289.95 from here (external link). The same web site is offering the Canon EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS for £249.95. I heard that's a good lens too?

This shop (external link) is offering the Tamron 17-50 for £244.99. Anyone here bought from them or from the other shop above?

i am also looking to upgrade my kit lens and i am also in the same "price range" as you.

Have you looked at the Tamron SP AF 28-75MM F/2.8 XR Di LD Aspherical (IF) (external link)
I have looked around quite a lot and i think this will be the one i will buy. HERE (external link) you can find it for 253GBP (about 300Euros) and at B&H you can find it for US$499 (about 370Euros, or 312GBP).
Anyone ever bought from OneStopDigital (external link)? They seem to have incredible prices!!!

I have read really nice reviews about this lens.
Is there any one who has it and can maybe post some images and give us some feedback about it!?

OneStopDigital is reliable, they're based in Hong Kong, thats why they're so cheap compared to european stores.

You're not going to get a massive jump in IQ with that budget, the 18-55IS has great IQ already, so what you can do is go for a faster lens if you need it. Just don't expect to get amazing shots just because you aren't using a "kit" lens anymore.

better image quality in what way? For pure sharpness, the 18--55mm IS ranks higher than you would think.

Never any trouble with the Canon 18-55mm image stabilizer lens, which generated these images.

Note that the first two images were taken indoors and with available light, with the first image coming close to the lens' minimum focusing distance.

I bought my 15-85 from Simply Electronics - delivery was ok -around a week rather than the couple of days quoted - and price was very good at £499, £538 with a Hoya pro filter - less than most other places 'unboxed' versions split from kits

I had that horror experience which I'm not likely ever to repeat again.

received a defective 135L which rattled terribly and it took me four months to get my money back. There's more...my 430 ex II came with photocopied instruction booklet and every now and again it would fail on me. My battery grip from them for my 450D is a bit dodgy but it's minor compared to the lens issue.
