Walking with a big white lens on the street ? Nikon shooters have a huge advantage here with their shy black lenses but people with Canons might look like paparazzi.

i don't have a big white lens...my sigma is a "shy black lens"...and people still notice it...i'm not really on the street with it though...most of the times i'm on a trail...people notice the size more than anything...

people just notice the size of the cameras to begin with...i get comments when i have my 10-20mm on the camera...

yes

but then i feel ridiculous when walking my cocker spaniel, when a hot girl smiles at me, when public speaking, and when asking the salesman where the smaller sized condoms are...

...actually it feels good to have a big white lens in my hand

I don't feel any different about my lenses than a day laborer feels about his shovel.

They're the tools I use to do my job.

ETA: And until you're out in public with a lens that's just slightly shorter than you are, you don't know from "getting looks."

No, I do not. Walking through a city with my 70-200 strapped to my neck doesn't make me feel ridiculous at all! I really like the lens, I love the results, I love shooting with it.
Of course you may get some odd looks, but I only really had those when I passed people and I learned to ignore those. I'm busy shooting, looks shouldn't obstruct me doing that.

Self conscious possibly, but never ridiculous.

Actually I have observed that most of the time when someone notices or makes comments on my equipment it is another photographer who is interested in a conversation and to compare notes.

Why would you feel ridiculous? I'm more concerned about looking for photo opportunities. If your head is more focussed on how you look, you are not focussed on photography and will not come back with great photos.
