Look at MJHurley's photo and look at the one I posted above. The lens Hurley was using has 4 aperture blades and therefore creates 8 pointed flares as the "star" is a result of the light that squeezes through the area where the aperture blades come together. In my shot there are 14 points as the lens I was using has 7 blades. Hope this clears some things up for you. :)

Thanks, I learned something! Now I am off to figure out how to determine how many blades each of my lenses have. Scatterbrained, do you remember what lens you used in the photo above?

Wikipedia will tell you for a number of lenses, for example http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canon_EF-S_18-55mm_lens (external link) says the 18-55mm kit lens has "# Diaphragm blades: 6"

17-40L. You could always just google your lens and aperture blades. ;)

I love looking at this thread. Great shots, everybody!

Here are a couple random ones from the holidays. I need to go back during the day and get some more in, as this isn't my usual subject matter or style, but eh.

I'm loving the first one. The rest arent great also. I have never been a fan of Disney World but the photographic opportunities I see on this thread may change my mind.

^ so, what did you think about Euro Disney?
My wife and I went in 2009... I'm mixed on it. The Magic Kingdom was cool... different takes on old rides and new ones to boot. HS, however...It seemed to me to be more like a circus.

We blew through both parks in a single day. Was cool to say we've been there, but we have no desire to go back.

We did both in a day too.. Was great fun & the fast pass system is great, but only available if you stay in the Disney hotels!

Only downer to our trip was some scum bag pinching our buggy with the kids toy bag on it, which also included their autograph books and some of my boys favourite cars!! We did get the buggy back tho, found it about 10 metres away from where we were standing, shame I didn't catch them!
