It's a Samyang 8mm Fisheye, slightly cropped. Rather unusual lens for dog photography, but I think it really works...

You bet it works, your shots with this lens are some of the most unique dog shots I've ever seen. Makes me want to get one. Beyond the lens, there is a lot of skill in this shot. The comp is really good, and did you use flash to expose the dog while shooting into the sun?

Is it difficult to nail the focus, or does the super wide angle give you nearly infinite focus at most distances?

wide angles are actually really easy to focus with. You just manually set it to the hyperfocal dustance so everything is in focus and it takes it right out of the equation. Just point and shoot once the exposure is set as well.

doesnt look like a flash due to no catch lights..... the snow might be reflecting enough light back on the subject i guess. That or heavy recovery in post?

Yeah, I was thinking that as well. Flash would have thrown more light into the eyes. If it was heavy recovery in post, he did a nice job with the mask.

^^ agreed. I guess a second shot could have been used for the sky. Amazed the sun didnt blow the whole sky out. SO with that in mind it could have been 2 shots blended with some very good masking.

However the sun is very low in the sky so it may have been weak enough to not blow out the sky.

Thank you very much for your kind words!

There was quite a bit of PP (LR3) involved, I pulled down exposure about 1 stop on the sky with almost full recovery and masked Gina to increase exposure and brightness about 1/2 stop on her.

The focus is surprisingly easy to manage, stop the lens down to f/11, set focus to about 50cm on the focus scale and fire away. The hard part is getting all the dirt off your clothes after lying in the mud all day ;)

I would like to mention that I got the inspiration to those style of pics from another board, the DSLR-Forum.de. They have a thread dedicated to dog photography there and especially the users "Alyat" and "Wolfrüde" post the most amazing UWA shots. Very interesting read if you speak german (or can use Google Translate :D).

That’s the difference between me and the rest of the world. Happiness isn’t good enough for me, I demand euphoria!
