One of my first shots with this lens. I think I'm going to like it!

Have been going back and forth trying to decide on how I wanted to go. I have an 85mm 1.8 and picked up some cheap tubes, but really wanted a "real" macro lens. When I had Nikon gear I had one of the 90mm Tamrons and liked it, so now that I have moved to Canon, I knew it was just a matter of time.

I've been prowling Craigslist for a while and walked into a sweet deal on the Canon 100mm 2.8 with Canon hood and Tripod ring, boxes, etc. for $400.

How did I do? (On the lens, not so much on the spider)..

Just brought it home and went out to the garage in search of a bug and found this little guy. Body length was about 2mm, shot handheld. Took a few tries to get him in focus.

It sounds a good deal, especially with the tripod ring. Is it the current USM model or the earlier one?

Current USM model, also came with a Tiffen UV filter. Seems they generally go in the $375-$400 range for lens. Ring, hood, and filter are a nice bonus.

I find that over a period of time, I've been taking more profile pics with this lens than macro ones!!

I love my 100mm macro.

But if you can't afford an upgrade, and have something less than a 100mm lens, you might try this trick. I used a Fotodiox 58mm Reverse Ring to mount my 24mm backwards and take this...

It costs less than $10 on Amazon. It took a bit of work to get it going but it is interesting for folks who can't shell out $450 for a used macro lens.

Terrific work, Frankk!

Good idea about the reversing ring.
