yeah, sounds like renter's ins is a good idea for me. A couple of bucks a month for the peace of mind.

I have an $8000 Personal Articles Policy with my renter's insurance. It's around $8 a month, with a $500 deductible.

You can not insure your equipment for commercial use on a home owners policy. I will say that I was able to get $15,000.00 worth of coverage commercially for pretty reasonable rates. $500 per year I think?

What he said. $1MM Liability included. I think it is called a Marine Inland policy or something like that. My State Farm Agent got it for me.

Yeah, its very risky, but Im sure it happens. But these people are the same ones who will do it and it causes the Insurance companies to charge us honest people more for coverage..I wasnt aware of the Shipping company type claims..thats crazy.

Keep in mind that insurance rates and regulations will vary between different zip codes, states not to mention countries. so your best bet is talk to your insurance agent and get some real answers.
Also keep in mind that filing any type of home owner's insurance claim in the US may result in higher premiums or loss of coverage. Sad but true, I know. So if you have $1000 worth of gear (like yours truly, LOL) its not worth insuring it with a $500 deductible or at the same token filing a claim for a lost/stolen one piece of equipment.

I just got my kit insured today. It came out to around $1.12 per 100 dollars worth of gear for USAA.

Definitely worth it, if only for the peace of mind.

Yeah, it was less than $3/month extra for me. Considering one building went up in flames in my complex due to a bunch of candles in one unit, I figured it was well worth it. You cant ever control how careful others in the same building are.

Yup--I'm with USAA too, and my premium was about the same. Now as long as my wife doesn't look at that policy and realize that my camera bag is insured for more than her wedding/engagement rings are, I'll be OK. :)

Just something to think about. Does you renter's insurance or homeowners ins cover things like
- covers equipment damage while you are away from home shooting.
- cover your sorry azz when someone trips over your light stand and breaks an arm while the stand falls and hits someone else on the head causing a nasty gash - and they both sue
- covers your equipment if it is stolen out of your vehicle, or hotel room, or while you are at the zoo, park, mall, (insert your favorite place away from home to shoot).

If in doubt, check your policy and/or call your agent. I did.
Note: The light stand equipment damage and personal injury is my biggest worry. Crazy things happen in the gym/arena.

State Farm insures my gear - about $7,700 worth for $115 - about $1.49/$100. The policy covers theft, loss, damage and other catastrophes.
