These are just the photos for your viewing pleasure.

You can view the rest of the shots from my Flickr (external link)set as I finish editing and uploading them.

You can also read a little bit about the photos in my Tumblr (external link)post.

Sweet captures!
The 1st, 4th, and 5th shots seem a little flat/ lacking contrast to me.

I managed to get a few more photos processed. Not much work was done to these. Mostly just a little cropping to get the framing the way I wanted it.

#2 of 2nd set is beautifully balanced in exposure.
All nice shots. Kinda hard to take a bad one under Hawaiian skies though. ;)

Killer set and checked out the info on Tumblr. I caught a few of the heats on Surfline but it must have been awesome to actually be there and see/feel the power of Pipe.

Keep em coming!

OKAY! Here are some shots of the guys getting slotted in the tube. They really made it look so fun to be out there!

These guys make it look so easy....ughhh so sick! How much did you have to crop? From what I've seen the line up is fairly close to the beach.

The paddle out isn't too far to get in the lineup. It looked pretty sketchy trying to navigate the channel and the current was pulling guys way north of the actual takeoff spot. I think the tide was pretty low at the time which probably made for even sketchier conditions with the reef. I was posted up near the judge's tower right in front of the Volcom house. All those factors were in effect while trying to get the shots. I still had to crop about 40% of the photos to get closer to the action. I'm grateful to have the higher megapixels from the 7D to support a heavy crop without too much detail lost.

Yes, I was using the 7D + 400/5.6 combo. I had ISO bumped up to 200 so I could shoot at 1/1000 plus or higher.

There were a few 1D4 + 600/4IS combos out there. Those guys were hired by magazines to shoot the event. There were also a few in-water photogs that had to get special permission to shoot out there. They parked it at the end of the channel next to the Hawaiian Water Patrol jetski.

I'm sure there must have been some fun people watching if you were by the Volcom house.
