tonight i used my new strobe kit and had a red filter on one light pointed at a white cloth background. the background had a pink tint to it but was not red. i had two lights. refl. umbrella main at 1/2 power about 3 ft away camera left. red filter on background light at 1/4 power two feet from background camera right. f/4.5 at 100ISO 1/125.

were did i go wrong? i was trying to get background to have a nice red color to it.

im trying to get a pic up.

Unfortunately white is not a good background to use to try and get good vibrant colors out of. If you want to add them in PP then it is great.

The short of it is that white reflects color while black absorbs color. The camera will not pick up the reflected color rather the absorbed color

Black is a great background color for using gels on.
