This lens is, incredible... If the IQ brings that telephoto-prime like sharpness, it will be incredible!

Too bad the price will be insane (like many have said, I highly doubt under $6500-$7000) so sadly, I probably will not own it for a long, long time.

or use the internal plus 2x so you have a much less usable 560-1120 f/11 hmmm... lol

Well, the 400-800 f/8 combination will autofocus on a 1-series body. :)

I will definitely be getting this lens. I am tops on the list at a friend's camera shop. Guess I should start saving my pennies now.

Which, of course means, that if I buy this lens, I'll be obligated to buy a 1-series body also.

Cha-Ching!! :)

No, we have not but Canon's history is pretty good with their long L glass.

Maybe it's just me, and I know this may be treason to some, but why does this lens not excite me on whit? Why do Canon's new baby flashes not excite me one whit?

The 580exII needs replacement big time. The SB900 stomps it.

The 200-400 Nikon, which I owned, was nothing to write home about. Very front heavy, extremely stiff zoom ring, and okay IQ.

And why can I not get excited about a lens for $7,000? And you can bet your bottom dollar that's how much it will be. You're totally deluding yourself if you think any cheaper.

I currently own 5 automobiles ranging from a 2011 Lexus SUV, 2009 Acura SUV, and on down the line.

Why would I rather buy a used Honda Accord than drop seven large on a damn lens?

Are there that many pros out there ready, willing and able to drop that kind of cash?

I guess so. For if not, Canon better do some price dropping.

I guess alot of people really enjoy photography and getting all the gear! I think each lens canon makes has it's own greatness in some reason, functionality or form. Some of these guys see the lens as you see a car. To each his own really

Different strokes for different folks. I too do not find the new flashes exciting, but I am excited about this lens... I just wish it wasn't going to be so damn exciting.

I personally find new cars a waste of money. I also don't find a thing about SUV's exciting. Did I mention how overpriced I think Lexus is? Like I said, different strokes for different folks!

(With that said... both cars my wife and I have are bought new, lol, but there are reasons for it, I assure you ;))

On a side note, why do you have 5 cars in New York?

the most awesome part about any of this part of the discussion is that SOMEONE *will* do it once this lens hits the market :D

lol +1 on that. I suppose one could put a 2x III on there and disable the internal 1.4x, already mentioned. Thats not a horrible idea, although it would still be dicey enough IQ and require a 1 series body to AF. But stacking a 1.4 TC onto a $7000 lens. I'd think that would destroy its native capabililties. Anyone for low-resolution 1120mm f/11 with bad CA?

5D mark iii, EF-24-105mm f/4, EF 70-200 f/2.8L IS II USM, Speedlite 580 EX II plus 3x Yongnuo 568EX, photoflex 60" white umbrella, Westcott Apollo Orb with grid

400mm on a 1.6x body is still 400mm. sensors do not change lens physics...

Eh, ditto on the flashes..Dont see whats so special about them at all...the 270EX just came out on top of it

I'm torn TBH, Cool lens, cool concept, but from my perspective I do wish that they woulda released say, a 50mm f/1.4 II or a new 100-400 instead...or something else that i think would be more interesting and affordable to more of us out here...

But hey, I'm not Canon, and im not gonna say it wont sell or im not a little excited for it, I just wished there was a lens announced I actually gave a flip about

A lighter, 500 f/4 doesn't do it for you either? :)

On a side note, why do you have 5 cars in New York?

I don't live in the city, for one thing, I live in the closest northern suburb with a huge driveway and lots of land. There are five family members and each has their own car.

I said nothing about SUV's being exciting, but when is the last time you pulled a boat or a trailer with your sedan?

And like you, I needn't explain. The wife wanted a Lexus. And when one gets almost $7 grand off the sticker, it's not as overpriced as you may think.

Besides, when you live in the suburbs and commute by car, you spend an inordinate amount of time in your car. It must be safe, comfortable, and able to negotiate bad weather. Next time it snows two feet, as it did here recently, bring your sedan around if it can move out of the parking spot. I'll take you for a spin in my SUV.

Well, I can see the lack of excitement over the baby flashes, but this lens? The ONE? The symbol of optical superiority that speaks 'Canon' without question?

Heathen! Scofflaw! Philistine! I hereby wish eternal malfunction on your vibration reduction lens(es)! :D

This one will be better. Well, I hope that it will be anyway. Very useful range for me, that is for certain. And the built-in teleconverter - I had to think about that for a minute or two, but I really like that feature.

And why can I not get excited about a lens for $7,000? And you can bet your bottom dollar that's how much it will be. You're totally deluding yourself if you think any cheaper.

It'll probably start at $8500, then drop into the high $7000 range after 6-8 months. Pending any bad news regarding its performance, I will probably have one before the end of the year.
