Well when people asked Mozy if it really was unlimited storage the answer from Mozy used to be that with Mozy unlimited means unlimited. Thats why so many bougth into it.

You most likely are correct that the money just is not there. But the strange thing is that it appears that Mozy just only a few months ago realised they were loosing money?? Come on they have been in this business since 2006 offering unlimited storage. They can't say they did not know the storage requirements would be huge. So this leads me to speculate they migth have had this planned from the very beginning hoping that a percentage of the power users would have no choice but to stay with them and pay the hefty price. Kinda like drugdealers give the addicts the stuff for free and when they are hooked charge the heck out of them.

maybe they were just hoping to get a big name and get picked up by some big company like EMC count their millions and retire

hell that sounds like a plan to me I am going to start one of these things now lol

I would imagine the service is setup across many redundant arrays and what happened was they reached a tipping point in terms of growth. The key for success with this type of service is you want slow to average but consistent enough growth where you can pay off one array before adding another. Just as hosts want to pay off servers ASAP and try to fill those sitting idle before blowing money on new hardware that might sit empty for months.

Regardless what the hardware, development and bandwidth costs you also have employees, electric, racks, cables, space and lots of other small things that add up quickly. I doubt many consumers have even a tiny clue how expensive it is just to get an industrial router and they don't come with free shipping. Photographers should understand because both industries are similar and you need much more then just a cheap camera from Walmart if you want to be the one shooting magazine covers.
