I had a "rattle flash" on my 40D - something else died on the body so I sent it to Canon, the flash didn't rattle when it came back.

Sent it off under warranty or return to the store if within a few days of purchase. Was the camera packaged as you would expect a new camera to be packaged? (retailers will sometimes put returned items back on the stock shelf and send out as new - not often, but it happens)

I believe there is a rattle that is normal from the orientation sensor.

Doesn't happen on any other body I have owned and Canon fixed it in my 40D... :)

Rattles are common amongst many of the crop bodies, those rattles come from either orientation sensors located near the flash unit, or loose armatures of the flash hinge.

A tiny drop (actually less than a drop, just a touch up with the brush) of transparent nail polish should solve the problem of the loose eye cup.
If it's applied on the bottom side, it'll be firm and invisible, yet very easy to break and clean if for whatever reason you need to take the eye cup off..

What we see depends mainly on what we look for.

my eye cup is loose too but the flash does not rattle..my 50D had the rattle from new and it was just the hinges on the flash rattling when they were folded up inside..when the flash is up the arms have preasure on them and no more rattle:D

This is really interesting... The eyecup on my T2i is good and tight and the flash doesn't rattle at all.

That's because of lesser build quality of the Rebels :lol:

The flash rattle thing is documented in the end of the user's manual. There's something like an FAQ question about a rattle when the camera shakes, and the answer says this is normal due to the latch in the flash mechanism.

My 7D's eyecup rattles if I play with it, but honestly is it something to complain about? Either your eye is touching it or your camera is far enough away from your face that you won't hear it. How frequently does it matter how the camera sounds when you unnaturally shake it close to your ear?

I blame the 1D eyecup which the 7D uses...

In route to B&H for an exchange, they are crazy nice. I examined the flash a little more and there is definitely something in one of the hinges that seems off. It doesn't move up and down the guide as smoothly as the other one.

Although it is probably functionally fine, it noticeably rattles and I would accept this if it was "normal" but doesn't sound like it is.

Thanks everyone.

OK ... I gently moved my camera from side to side and there is indeed a slight movement noise from the flash, like a very quiet clock tick.

Oh no, I hope I haven't started a craze to shake your camera! Mine was definitely louder so my hinge or whatever was probably worst off. I had a co-worker (POTN member) come look at it and he noticed it right away.

Anyhow, stop shaking and start shooting...haha.
