I just ordered my Siggy lens that I have been lusting over for a week. The lowest price I could find anywhere was about $669 shipped both on eBay and from online stores.

I noticed that 47stphoto on eBay had a "Make Offer" deal setup on their auction listing so I put in an offer for $629 with free shipping and they accepted the offer in like 4 minutes. I was happy!

You might be able to get it even cheaper but I just wanted to let anyone know that's looking at getting this lens that you can get it brand new for less than the $669 advertised everwhere. Someone put in an offer for $599 and see if it goes through! :)

The difference that I saved was put towards a Hoya UV filter.

Excellent lens. The copy I currently have is sharper than any 17-55 f2.8 IS I have owned or used, from center to edge, throughout the focal range.

You got one for a nice price too. Enjoy it.

OK - maybe I was a little hasty with my implied criticism. I had the name in my mind as being associated with some mischief so went to rsr to check.

The resellerratings overall rating looks average at best, and the supplier is not enrolled in their monitoring system, but the comments made do seem predominantly positive, with a few glitches here and there.

Many of the comments did strike me as being very similar in style, but that could be coincidence. I checked to see if most of the reviewers were one-time reviewers whose only post was for 47th St, and that was true, but when I checked BH, I found the same thing.

OP - please report back on your experience when the goods arrive.

Well they have outstanding eBay feedback which leads me to believe I shan't have any problems with the transaction. Fingers crossed. :)

Well consider they're Sigma authorized dealer I'd put more confidence on that more than resellerratings.com .

I'm assuming you're talking about the IS version of the lens. Truth be told, the non-IS version is considerably sharper in the tests I've seen, and goes for $200 less.

I bought my 50-500 sigma from them via ebay during BCB days.

I recently bought some opteka tubes from them via ebay and was a little irritated that they shipped them via some super cheap service where UPS sends it ground to the local post office, who then delivers it. So it took forever to get here... and how much did they save? $0.25? I probably wouldn't buy from them again unless it was a significant savings.

I was unaware that Sigma offered a non-OS version of this lens?

I'm pretty sure he is confusing this with the Tamron 17-50.....

I think you are right, the reviews seem to indicate the new Sigma 17-50 HSM OS is sharp and a good lens - serious competition for the Canon 17-55 !

There's:

1: Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 (old version) discontinued
2: Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 macro (newer version) discontinued
3: Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 (new with addition of HSM and OS)
4: Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 (older but much loved)
5: Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 VC (soft)

That summarizes it. The op is talking of the 3rd one on the list, the new Sigma. I've had experience with number 2 and 4. Had one bad copy of Tamron, plus AF was very noisy so didn't bother trying again. Then had one bad copy of Sigma, then got a good one which I now have still. The new Sigma 17-50mm is a big competitor to the Canon 17-55mm f/2.8 IS. The Sigma is weaker wide open in the corners in terms of sharpness and contrast, but the center is actually sharper than the Canon. It's also cheaper and comes with a hood for the cost.
