This explains it - the lights below are hitting the monument, creating enough heat (plus ambient rising temp) to have some of the ice start turning into vapor and the reflected light hits the vapor.

It just *looks* like an uncontrolled adjustment brush from lightroom when, in fact, it's naturally occurring.

Thanks.

Or even more nature. While the artificial lights themselves can kick out some of the frosty ice, the light from the sub will do much more of that. The artificial lights are narrow spectrum, resulting in illumination efficiency. So they appear brighter relative to their radiation energy. That is, unless they are incandescent (very doubtful ... they would be pounced on by taxpayers for that waste). When the sun comes up, it, along with all its UV and IR radiation that comes with the package, does much more. I see the temps start to rise just as there is a mere hint of light in the morning horizon. This morning (13-Feb-2011) with broken overcast, I was up before the sunlight appeared and the temperature was 32.1 F. About half an hour later, I could see a bit of light coming over the east horizon (sunrise was still over an hour away) and the temperature had already risen to 34.9 F. Of course, this effect can also come from a south wind, and I don't know which dominated today. But that is a typical scenario.

Note also that there is a difference between microscopic ice crystals floating in air vs. water that is evaporated or sublimated into the air. The ice crystals will, in time, sublimate. Before that happens, they will have more effect scattering light.

Here's one of my favorites from the Gundlach Bundschu Winery. The picture helps people say "Gundlach Bundschu"

Nice shots. Thanks for the technicals.

You're welcome, and thank you!

I forgot to mention, added slight vignette and a light touch of grain to the third one in LR. All three of these were my first images "properly sharpened" in LR instead of randomly shuffling all the sliders about.
