Wow this game was close. Came down to Memphis shooting a 3-pointer with less then 3 seconds left to win 63-62. 1 is with a 85 1.8, 5 to 7 with a 300 f4 and the rest with a 50 1.8.

Fantastic Job on these shots. How in the world are you getting such sharp images. I am shooting my kids high school basketball games and my setting are 1600 ISO 250SS 2.8.

The problem is My images are coming out soft and out of focus.

Thoughts??

I appreciate the help.

Thanks!

I'm still shooting around 2.8 with the 50 and 85. I try to keep the iso around 1250 and SS 800. It's a well lit arena.

With the 300 f4 I'm at f4 so I take the shutter down to 400-500. I don't shoot much fast action with it so the slow SS is ok.

I would never try action at a SS of 250. If you are using a prime take the f-stop a little faster so you can hope to get a SS of 500. If you cant get a SS like that focus on players mid court or when they stand still ready to drive the ball or other non fast moving shots.

Thanks! For the start of the second half I went way up in the stands and hung out for a while and got 5, 6, and 7.

I looked up 4 and 8 and they are both with the 50. I know I'm really over using this little lens but I plan on getting a 24-70 soon.

Here are some stock images of MJ from the game.

The lighting sure is nice. I was shooting f/2.8. 1/500, 1600 and later f/2.8, 1/640, 2000. I really like your results. Practice practice practice (for me).

That's odd. I usually get a SS of around 1/800 at 2.8 1600. I guess its brighter from the floor.

My hand held light meter tells me it is 640 2.8 @ 1600 in the middle of the paint and 1000 at center court.
I am beginning to think that different camera (newer cams 7D, 50D and MKIV) censors have alot to do with what settings are. I get 800 f2.8 @ iso 2000, I can go to 1000 but then I have to worry more about the under exposure on the skin tones.
Shooting from the top straight down near the rim will yield me iso 640 f5.6 ss1250 to 2000

My 50D was almost blowing jersey highlights at 1/500 2.8 1600 I probably could have gotten away with another 1/640 shutter speed and left everything else the same. My RGB histogram was about as ideal as could be though. Yours look as bright as mine at 1/500.
