Actually, the second one is just a tighter crop of the background compared to the first. I didn't use any modifiers on the light besides the gel. Gear: 20D, 17-55, Nifty Fifty, 430ex, 2 * YN-560, AB400

Looks like you used a grid in the first one but not in the second? Any light modifiers?
