Excellent shots Harvey... your Hairy Woodpeckers posted with the Downy are great lessons for identification... many seem to have a problem with a proper ID and these are perfect renditions. :)

Harvey,

the colors on your shots are spot-on. What K number do you use to correct to perfect blacks and whites, or do you use another method? Looked like a fairly overcast day when taken? I have some point blank shots of the same downy woodies, but don't get colors that exact. Thanks in advance.

These are great Harvey.....you can really see the difference in both with these shots.

Thanks a lot, Dave. I get both species here year round and I see a lot of them. Most people don't so it can be confusing for them. For me, the size alone would be enough. By comparison, the Downy is tiny. If one sees them in profile, the beak is a dead giveaway.

Thanks very much, Dave.

You have a good eye. :) It was indeed overcast which is when I usually shoot at this location because I can't get the sun behind me. In this case, I corrected to 5400 K, but it can sometimes be more or less. 5400 K - 5600 K seems to work best most of the time.

Another great set Harv of a bird we don't get in Australia. They are everywhere but here and NZ I think. It is always a pleasure to view something we don't have and they are great catches.

Agreed. Man that male Hairy really shows that long beak!
We see Hairys here only rarely, and constantly wonder if any of our "longer beaked" Downys might be...

Good clear shots with excellent detail.

great post Harvey,

Wow! Great shots, pretty peckers! The ones around here are pretty boring.

Thank you for the WB # lesson, Harvey. I'll certainly try to correct mine to that temp and see if the colors on my backyard downys look more like yours!
