In reply to MJ's concerns about image theft from SmugMug you wrote......

Would you not still have to reduce the images on SmugMug to the sizes that POTN recomends? I must be missing something is why I ask.

My work around was to lock my SmugMug gallery down and then just post the link to the image. The down side is the image will not show up in my posts and the reader would have to click on the link to see it.

So I like your suggestion better.

Jon...

Smugmug does the resizing for you and you simply select an image size to share. This would mean you have a 20MB file size limit rather then 150kb  but the POTN 1024px on the long side for an image rule still applies so that we don't "break" the forum so to speak.

Just pulled the trigger on purchasing the 60D at Calumet. Was waiting to see how the rebate played out, but it looked like everyone just raised their prices to match the rebate. Saw that Calumet had the camera for $830 (only see the lower price once it's in the cart) and picked it up there since that looked like a really good deal and the best price around.

Now I just need an SD card and perhaps an extra battery or two. Any recommendations? I'm thinking of getting the Transcend class 10 16gig card that Amazon has for $27 or go to the local Micro center store and get their class 10 16 gig card for around the same price. I've been using a Micro Center compact flash card in my 30D for several years. As for batteries, someone is selling a Meike grip with two batteries for $65 on Amazon. Tempting, but I'm not sure how well the batteries will hold up.

If you only plan to get one card, get a 32. I just got done ordering a pair of 32 Gigs because I found 16 couldn't record enough consecutive HD video.

Imma, how are you liking that 15-85? Do you find F5.6 being limited indoor?

I love the lens and focal range and hope it lasts and lasts. Naturally f/5.6 is a limiting factor but I would generally not use over 50mm indoors and I use it as a landscape and city-travel-walkaround lens anyways. I have my 50 1.8 if I need better light indoors.

Focal length 15mm (f3.5) 24mm (f4) 35mm (f4.5) 50mm (f5) 70mm (f5.6)

You still get cut off at 12 minutes per clip though right, or is there a way around that? I don't really need a way around it, just curious. The only thing I could see myself recording needing longer clips is maybe if my kids are in a show at school and I tripod it or something. What do wedding videographers do about that?

Was at a musical concert recently, and recorded the artist in 1080. Don't know about the 12 minute thing, because I was shutting down recording between songs. I only got in 5 songs, and ran out of memory. I'd show you the video, but I promised the artist I wouldn't upload 'em. I suppose I could have swapped out another 16 GB card if I had one fast enough, but the only other one I have is a Lexar 600X, and it runs into buffer problems.

Also feeling the need to upgrade to a faster video card and 1080p monitor on my Desktop computer -for some reason the playback seizes up despite the fact I've just added 8 gigs more of extra memory. My laptop plays them no problem if I reduce them to 720 playback in Quicktime. Media Player 7 just seizes up and won't give you the opportunity to resize the video.

Kinda wierd, though. The laptop processor is supposed to be wimpier, and it only has 4 gigs altogether. But it plays the video better.

anyone do tethering? I'm thinking of picking up a laptop next to do tethering with LR3. I'm just not sure what I all need to make this happen.

To anyone wondering, I finally sold my extra Meike grip for 50$ locally. I paid 70$ but returning it to the ebay seller in China would have cost me more than 20$...

Now I still have a faulty Phottix LP-E6 that I should take care of...

I'm looking at the same grip. Whats your impressions of it so far?

I have had great luck with a Transcend 16 gb class 10. If you go with a 32GB be sure to have a spare card. You will have card problems eventually. You want to be able to swap out and get restarted rather than be dead in the water.

The Meike grip is really great quality. I'd recommend it to anyone trying to save a few bucks. But I would never buy a no-brand name. A friends of mine has one, the quality is very bad. Buttons aren't smooth, they click. Same for the shutter button. The scroll wheel feels cheap. It really is a replica of the Meike grip, only cheaper again...

I ended up ordering 2 16gb Transcend cards basically to make sure I have a backup on hand.

I order a 60D body last night, so I can post in this thread now. I was torn between the 60D and the 7D. I went to the store last week and spent 20 minutes with both cameras and decided I liked the 60D. Here is why:

Previous camera - I'm coming from an XSi, not a 50D. Most of the people who are unhappy with the 60D are coming from a 40D or 50D and are used to the joystick and it's features. Coming from the relatively basic XSi I don't have to unlearn something that others miss.

Weight - Although I liked the little larger size of the 7D, I could see where along with a heavy lens the extra weight might bug me when walking around for the day.

SD card memory - Everything I use, my laptop, TV, other cameras, playstation, etc. uses SD cards. I already have 3 8GB SDHC cards. Switching to CF would've incured more cost in both cards and a reader.

Cost - Always a factor, but not a major one on this purchase as I could have afforded the 7D. I like not spending the extra $500, maybe I can get some glass.

Articulating screen - I like the ability to fold the screen back in to protect it. I also like that the camera can autofocus (although slowly) in live view while I hold it at a weird angle. I have knee problems and sometimes have issues positioning myself to get the shot.

The menus that get good reviews on the 7D seem the same on the 60D, so no loss there. The rest of the feature set on the 60D is a substantial upgrade for me, so it should be great.

I have been debating on upgrading my glass to go with the new body. I will keep my cheap Sigma 50mm macro, but the others may change. I have been using the 17-85mm IS as my walk around lens. I have seriously considered upgrading it to a used 15-85mm IS. If I can sell the 17-85 my net cost to upgrade won't be too bad. As for my 70-300mm IS lens, I do like the range, but I have to think I'd get better shots from the 70-200 F/4 IS. Any advise on the glass?
