By the way, just for grins - if y'all want to use the really proper last character for the word moiré, instead of typing the "e" character, hold down the 'alt' key and type 130 on the numeric keypad. This works on PCs, but I'm not sure about Apple machines.

Thanks! I spent hours looking for the é key on my keyboard. I finally came to the conclusion that you needed to have a french or spanish keyboard to get that key ;)

Yeah, it's the worst I've ever seen (at least in photos that I've taken). I guess everything aligned just right to create a heck of a fireworks show :)

That is an excellent article and it is now bookmarked. Thanks.

All them there funny accented characters can be found using that technique, señor. They're a part of the ANSI character set.

However, as per Microsoft and Windows, the proper technique is to always precede the numerical value with a "0". If you don't you will not get the proper character in all versions of Windows. The code for "é" is 0233; the code for the "ñ" in "señor" is 0241, etc.

And everything costs money! That's why the code for "€" is 0128 and the code for "£" is 0163.

Just my 2¢ worth!

And here's a little table that lists them all.

holding down the alt-gr key does that for all the vowels áéíóú not sure american kbs have that, it is on a UK one

holding control+alt does the same thing áéíóú though also works with the 4 key to get the € € sign

saves you having to remember those ascii codes, not sure how you can get around that for the £ sign which US kbs also have missing iirc

It always bugs me when I want to type that character and forget the code for it -- it happens all the time in the Raw forum because of responding to something René says!

On Mac, option + e gives the acute accent, and you type the letter after that, so é = option + e, e. £ is option + 3, € is option + shift + 2.

On Windows, instead of trying to remember alphanumeric codes, certain accents can be done via control + punctuation key. For é, it's ctrl + ' (apostrophe), e. Dunno about currencies.

I don't recognize the "alt-gr" key thingie.

The ctrl-alt combination does not make anything happen with the vowels or 4 on my keyboard. I'm using Win2K for an operating system.

The shortcuts work for Word, Excel, and other Microsoft products. They do not work for non-Microsoft stuff. They don't work for this forum, for example.

The alt-number-pad-code works for Windows and everything running under Windows.

If you do a lot of accents and special characters, do what I did: print out a copy of the table I posted five posts back and tape it up next to your monitor. Then you can easily type things like "a full-frame sensor is 36×24mm," "the AoV is 46.7°," "8½×11" paper," "the tolerance is ±5µm," "ZF = fmax ÷ fmin," etc.

Go wild! Have fun!
