Help Me Decide, Canon EF-S 10-22 or Tokina 11-16 or ?

I own both the Canon and Tokina UWAs. Which is best depends on which conditions you'll be shooting in. For anything outdoors in the sunshine then the Canon's supreme flare-resistance makes it the lens of choice. For interior shooting or for astronomy wide-fields then the f2.8 of the Tokina is the deciding factor.

These are really the key factors you have to think of before picking the right lens.

I have extensive experience with both lenses and Frank sums it up really well.

Tokina is fast, sharp, produces awesome spikes when closed down but performs really bad when shooting straight into the sun (dont have experience with it shooting into strong spotlights on concerts).

Canon is sharp, more flare resistant, have a broader range but is slow which can be a dealbreaker where 1-2 stops can make or brake a shot.

I'm definitely in the same dilemma. I'd really like to get the Sigma 8-16....but I like to shoot food and indoors alot, so I'm not sure if this will perform as great as I want under low light.

Right now I'm leaning towards the Tokina....

I own the 10-22 but voted for the 2.8 tokina.

I live in 'ultrawide land' and shoot 95% at night, so I'm thinking about trading across for the 2.8. A little flair could be nice from streetlights occasionally.

IQ wise I think the Canon has the edge, but don't quote me. Just impressions and vague memories of reviews. Aperture is more important for me than marginal image differences.

This is something I've seen posted quite often, but I'm not sure why. At these extreme wide angles depth of field is normally pretty huge at any aperture. At 10mm, f2.8, you can set your focus at 2m and your depth of field is, from memory, something like 1m to 18m. Using f8 isn't going to give you any more useful DoF.

Well it shows how much of photography basics I have forgotten since last time i was into this.

Either way, thanks for the info, although, what I thought I had decided upon is now up for grabs. Again....

I am looking at the Sigma 8-16 basically due to my feeling that large apertures and wide angle might not be a common combination. My planned use for the lens is architecture and indoor photos of people.

i'm not sure if indoor people, and indoor food shots really require an UWA lens....the people shots probably won't be the most flattering of shots...and in my opinion the food shots wouldn't need the UWA...i'd rather have a longer lens with some decent macro capabilities...

yeah, Sigma 10-20 will be a good choice.

I love my Tokina 11-16mm on both my old 20D and the 50D. Images are unbelievably sharp, and the build quality is like a tank. Solid as a rock. Very close to "L" build for much less money, IMO.
I will miss the lens very much when moving to FF....it is for crop cameras only.

there's a million threads on this topic. Get the 11-16, since it has 2.8. The 10-22 tends to be a little dustsucker too.

how can u compare a 2.8 with a 3.4-4.5? this is the reason i go for a tokina

Reading everyones thoughts on this has helped me make up my mind. I am going with the Tokina... I think...

most of the time the lenses are used at their widest setting...so really an f2.8 to an f3.5 isn't a that huge of a difference...i think a bigger difference is the extra 1mm of width on the wide end...

My Vote - The tokina 2.8. Love this lens. Much prefer the 2.8 over the 4.5-5.6.

The one I tried couldn't get both left and right sides in focus.

Doesn't the Tokina have trouble with flare?
