But here's the thing. Kerry-Sue has taken a lot more photos of the kids with here Ixus 80is in the last 2 years because she takes it with her everywhere. The best photos are the ones you actually take, not the ones your camera is capable of, but you left it at home.

Anyway I don't think the capability gap is that big any more when comparing a 5 year old DSLR design like the 5D, with a modern micro 4/3rds or mirrorless aps-c camera like the Sony NEX. Sure, there are compromises like anything in life, but the compromise is not as big as it used to be, plus they have advantages like shooting hidef video a lot better than a 5D, ;) and being much more portable.

My mind is not 100% made up, but I am leaning strongly towards the NEX 5 with the 18-200 superzoom, and picking up the 30mm pancake lens when it comes out later this year for when I want a pocketable camera. The 4/3s system is much more extensive currently, but that will change, and the Sonys are widely reviewed as having by far the best image quality of any currently available mirrorless interchangeable lens cameras. They actually have better High ISO performance than the 5D!

Plus I figure I should be able to get the new camera, and have at least a couple of grand left over to reduce debt...or buy some other toys.

I wonder if people would have the same negative reaction if I was looking at a Canon MIL camera? Shame they don't make one, or have any plans to as far as I can tell.

Everything I have seen about the nex says it takes nice pictures, but the lenses are average and the interface and ergonomics are really, really bad.

Cool! Got some dates to work to?

Unfortunately it will be a flying visit as I can't bring my family with me due to it not being holiday time here...
I haven't booked the flights yet, as this is all last second stuff. but if everything goes well, I will arrive in Auckland on Sunday 13th or Monday 14th March. I have a family reunion on the Kapiti coast from Friday 18th till Mon 21st.. then I will be flying out of Auckland on Friday 25th or Saturday 26th March..

I would love to catch up with you guys. so I'll keep you up to date with my plans.

Everything I have seen about the nex says it takes nice pictures, but the lenses are average and the interface and ergonomics are really, really bad.

Alot of the interface gripes were improved with a firmware up grade (they made a couple of the buttons customizable), but with that kind of camera there will always be a certain amount of point and shoot style hunting through menus for advanced functions. It's one of the compromises of a smaller body. I had a play with one at the Sony shop at Silvia park today, and the basic selecting av mode, and iso was easy and quick enough. Then changing aperture was with the dial on the back. Didn't seem to bad for the everyday stuff to me.

Meh......I dunno what I want!

Best wishes and prayers to all you guys down there.

Bless the recently fallen and their family and friends.
I have a Cannon with me at all times. You can't take the shot if you don't have something with which to shoot.

Thank you...just heard from my brother who is okay, but my sister and sister-in-law I'm still worried about. We felt almost nothing in Nelson yet some felt it in Auckland...strange. It's such a helpless feeling not being able to do anything.

After speaking with various people in Christchurch. Don't expect to hear from people online anytime soon. 80% of the city has no power, and its not likely to be back on anytime soon.

The damage is considerably worse than September, and friends places which were relatively minor damaged last time, are bulldozer fodder this time.

Still havent heard from 1 brother...

I keep thinking there must be something we can do to help, but can't think what. Must be terrible down there.
