A 60D with a EFS 17-55/2.8?

What do you want to shoot? you might need a longer/wider lens depending on your subject matter.

Totally depends. What type of shooting do you do?

For general shooting, I might look at a 7d + fast prime, but there are a million combinations you could go with.

What are your requirements for a body? Do you need something with a fast burst rate? Something built very tough?
Do you prefer primes, or zooms?
again, what do you shoot? Anything in particular, or just general hobbyist-shoot-everything?

Nikon D7000, probably a mid-range flash and a wider prime to complement the kit lens. Should be under 2000$.

There is no viable Canon option in this price range compared to that.

Edit, oh yeah, and budget at least 300$ for a tripod, memory cards, camera bag, filters, rocket blower, and all the other niceties.

60D
concert/event shooting: either the Canon 17-55 f/2.8 or Sigma 17-50 f/2.8
portraits: Canon 50 f/1.8

Then save up for another prime (85 f/1.8 or 135 f/2) or tele (70-200) later.

With that 2000 dollar limit, what type of lenses are you looking at. If you want to go with a 2 lens option and a flash.

Canon 60D, ef-s 15-85 and the tamron 70-300 VC USD or canon ef 70-300 IS USM. And a Metz 50 or Nissin di622 flash.

You will be set for most general shooting. But it will be a bit over your budget. 900 for the body, 600 for the 15-85 for 700, and the 70-300 is between 400-450 dollars depending on model, and the flash will run 170-230 dollars

For the concert the 60D would be a good option with the nice high iso performance. But depending on the lighting. You may not need 2.8. If the concerts are with good lighting f4 and at times 5.6 will work with 3200iso.
