Bought My First Lens From Ebay, How To Make Sure It's Legit?

Hey all, I bought my first lens finally (55-255mm IS). I was wondering if there was a way to make sure it's a legit lens and not a fraud? Also, the lens sometimes does like a twitch type thing when I half press my shutter button, is that normal? seems like the lens shakes up just a little bit right before the red dots start beeping when in focus.

Replies are greatly appreciated! don't want to get ripped off for well made 200$

The shake is the auto focus/IS adjusting most likely. I've never used an IS lens so take what I said lightly.

The shake is perfectly normal. It is pretty prominent on the 55-250 IS.

thanks for the replies guys. I have AF off, but IS on. Does IS usually make the lens shake a bit?

The shake is the IS activating.

I've yet to hear of counterfeit lenses.

There is no Canon 55-255mm lens, you got a fake one. :)

Yep, that's normal for the 55-250.

I had the same reaction when I bought one a while ago but once you realize it's normal you kind of stop noticing it.

yeah, I think fraud lenses are few and far between, especially if the lens works on your camera. Take some pictures with it and if it looks nice and sharp and autofocuses properly, then you should be fine. To test the IS unit, take some pictures at lower shutter speeds ie. maybe 1/100 with the lens extended to 200-250mm and see if you get significantly more keepers with IS on.

Lots of hits for "ET-60 lens hood" : http://www.google.com …1,or.&fp=e4ddd8bed91671fa (external link)

Just depends on how much you want to pay and how fast you want it.

If considering non-Canon hoods, some of them can not be stored reversed on the lens (if you intend to do that). Fotodiox (external link)makes some specific to Canon lenses and the one I use will reverse-mount; check with them if they make one for your lens. Fotodiox also sold on Amazon.

what's the difference between an expensive hood and a cheap one? they seem to do the same thing to me.

Usually the difference is about $30.
