It took me a year to convince myself to buy it since I have a 70-200/2.8... what was I waiting for? I am just a dad with a camera but if you are looking for one lens for indoor sports... this is it... I am sold!

The blur in the pics I was taking of the ball/hands/feet/hair drove me to make the plunge.. no more blur.

These pics in a very poorly lit old gym. The only edit done is cropping. C/C appreciated.

Now continue with the primes and get a 300 haha. Best investment of glass I could ever get.

Beautiful shots. They all look soft though.
I really don't see a whole lot wrong with these besides things that could be done in post-processing. The expressions and positions kind of bother me, but you can't control that. :)

Dino, I know what you are saying about the expresions and hands... I posted these more to show the stop action than because they were great pics...

I post the better shots on my FB school sports page for the kids to see/share. Mind you only the last few on there are with the 85mm lens from today.

They do look on the soft side.

Couple suggestions:
- they're also underexposed. crank up the ISO to 3200, meter +1 to +2 EC off a white uniform and don't be afraid of a few "blinkies" in the histogram. clipping the whites a little helps with controlling noise.

- try sitting where the 3-point line and baseline meet; right of hoop is usually best since most players are righthanded. also makes it easier to frame the action and keep hands and feet in the frame.

have fun!

Damn, nice shots man. It's funny but I just shot an indoor soccer game last night( with my only 55-250mm IS lens) and all my pictures came out blurry. I even made a post about it https://photography-on-the.net …/showthread.php?t=1005921 . Do you think the 85/1.8 will fix this problem? If so, how much was your lens?

There's too much extra space on top of some photos, (1st and 4th) and horizon is off on some of them also. Cutting off the feet usually means that I go all the way up above the knees instead

Fino even a 2.8 lens would improve your shots compared to the 55-250.. allowing the shutter speed to get to at LEAST 1/400

Can't bump the ISO as I am using a Rebel xSi with a max ISO of 1600. These were all shot at 1.8/1600.

Too much top space. I try to crop them to 5x7 for sending jpegs to parents. It is easier to just tell them they are 5x7.

Exposure/Soft: Keep in mind there is not PP other than crop on any of these. If the feet were cut off in the picture it is just because they were cut off in the original. Need to work on my focal point to not cut them off. Some of it is just where I was sitting when the shot was taken.

I will try the other suggestions. Thanks for the great feedback.

The 85 would definitly help you... Its an amazing lens, and its a prime meaning Sharp photos. They are only 300$ on here or around 450 new? idk

Use f2.0 and it should resolve some of the soft images

did you by chance use a filter on that lens?
even though you seemed to have stopped the action, everything looks slightly soft/out of focus... a uv filter could explain that

Since you like shooting girls ball throw a 430 flash on there and use the lowest ISO that will give you a 250ss at 2.0 and you'll be set

Direct flash on the baseline? Ew.

Agreed on the softness. PP wouldn't help that. Stop down a bit to crisp things up.

No filter.
Will drop the the stop a bit. Didn't even think of that... they are soft due to almost no depth. So simple but I missed it.
Flash not allowed.

Thanks again...
