So I just got back from spending a week out at the Wedding and Portrait Photography International convention at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas (huge convention between 18-20K people)... anyways Canon happened to have a few lenses on display (these photos don't even show all of it).

... why they had multiple 800mm lenses at a wedding and portrait photography convention I'm not completely sure.

Click on the images to see a larger version and more of a description.

Behind the scenes somewhat was the Canon CPS member lounge... you could drop your equipment off for cleaning and check out, including optional calibration and basic repairs for free. Being able to make use of this service more than pays for the price of the Canon CPS membership. These guys are great and they bust ass and work hard long days to get all the equipment turned around for everyone.

Didn't even strike me that the WB was off.

Thanks for posting the pics! As for the superteles, I bet a lot of the guys there also are into sports and wildlife ;) Why wouldn't they show off those white beauties?

Fix white balance.

White balance to what?

The overhead lights in the convention center, or the different different white balance value from the lights that were over Canon's booth directly, or do I white balance to the 3rd different white balance value from the lights in the case with the lenses themselves. So what do I white balance too, and how do I deal with the tan color cast bouncing off the walls that were close by?

Maybe I just didn't care, I'm sorry that I didn't fully polish my images and that my photos were painful on your eyes to look at.

I didn't see it there, but I wasn't looking for it either. The longest glass I could see ever really wanting is the 300mm f/2.8L IS. I did ask about the zoom L series fisheye and they didn't have that one on display either, so I'm guessing that the 200-400 wasn't there either.

Canon is pretty tight with not letting people touch their lenses before they are publicly available. Last year at ImagingUSA they had the new 70-200mm lens on display but in a glass case and you weren't allow to handle it or shoot through it.

Thanks, Tommy but evidentially your eye isn't nearly as good as genius WB comment guy.

Actually the convention isn't fully of a lot of guys, but a lot of ladies... men were easily out numbered (2:1 and more likely 4:1). So while I'm sure some ladies are into sports and wildlife I don't think it's a more than a small percentage of folks who were in attendance.

I think the reason they had them on display was because it shows off more of what Canon does than what some folks might know. Additionally last year at Imaging USA in Nashville Nikon brought a similar supertele lens and had it on a mount that folks could mess around with, exactly like what Canon brought this year. So I think it was mostly a response to Nikon's last year thing, this year also Canon bought a larger space and I needed to make sure they filled it.

Maybe they figured you'd want to get a shot of the ring from the back of the church?

Probably for taking photos at wedding you weren't invited to?
