Please recommend me what are some good cheap ETTL compatible slave flashes that would work happily with a 580exII.
I know 430ex naturally does. How about the older 420ex?
Would the older EZ series require full manual?

I think I read a while back cheap sunpaks make great slave alternatives. Thoughts!

manual flash triggered by ur 580 would be fun no? its not hard to adjust manual flash for proper exp. you save some $$ and also interact with light in fun way... all this automation with ettl and such is actually harder than simply adjusting the power on flash.

I agree with sandro, how about something like a YN-560? I got one for $66.00USD shipped.

I have the older 420ex (unfortunately as my primary flash). It works fine as a wireless remote off of the 7D; so it should work just fine as a remote of the 580exII.

Flash can send signals to other flash (with compatible signal codes). This is call Master flash. Flash that receives is called Slave. The 5xx EX Speedlites can both send and receive. So they can act as Master or Slave. Models like the 4xx and lesser can only receive so they function as slaves only.
