Am I looking at any potential fatal problems? It really annoys me. I stopped using my camera for about a month while I had no lenses and now it makes this noise when I press the shutter button, lens off or on. It does it right as I turn the camera off or switch to live view as well. It happens while the camera makes the normal click sound...which is accompanied by a squeek noise.

Color me worried. Its an EOS 40D with about 8k on the shutter.

listen, shot while in live view using the focus button

Also, in continous shoot mode, on high...the camera has really slowed down.

does the squeak happen if you set mirror lock-up? if so, this would eliminate the shutter...
either way, probably need Canon to take a look at it to get it sorted.

some fairly old canon camera stuff, canon lenses, Manfrotto "thingy", and an M5, also an M6 that has had a 720nm filter bolted onto the sensor:

Are you sure it isnt the sensor-cleaning you hear?

uhh yeah, i know what the sensor cleaning is. I've owned 3 cameras that all did sensor cleaning. This is a squeak/squeal that happens EVERY time I press the shutter button to just take a picture.

it made the noise as soon as it went into mirror lock, and when I powered the camera off it squealed as it moved the mirror back.

Bump for someone from my hometown. :)

It sounds to me like the mirror assembly is on the way out. Maybe it just needs cleaned and lubed. It's been years since I've been back home, so I have no idea if anyone local can take a look at it for you. It might be best to box it up and send it off to Canon.

It squeeks and it squeals? Are you sure it's a camera? :D

Seriously, is it like a scrapping sound? Something mechanic or something electronic? If it's mechanic, you probably could get rid of it with a cleanup, if it's electronic... hmm I would remove the battery, turn it on and off several times with the battery off, press the shutter button with the battery off, this is with the intencion of removing any residual "power" still in the camera (works for desktops, should work for cameras), then insert the battery back, if it's still making the noise, you could try a firmware update, but I don't think it will do any good.

This is a mechanical issue...its not a scrapping/grinding sound. I have figured that out so far. I tried moving the mirror manually and the noise didn't occur. I think it might be whatever is covering this sensor.

It happens when the shutter is pressed, switch to live view, press the focus button in live view, turn off the camera, camera does sensor cleaning.

Virto! Not often you find someone from Quincy! Very cool. The camera still functions great its just really annoying. I'll keep using it until it stops I guess.

Yes, during the sensor clean, whatever moves inside of the camera immediately makes the noise while moving.

It must be the sensor curtain (loose translation from portuguese), that noise is really annoying, I would have it serviced...

found an identical video on youtube...his got a shutter replacement.

Canon says they don't have any recorded cases of this issue...and its abnormal to say the least. So I guess I'm gonna keep going till it shows normal signs of shutter failure (which could be soon I suppose)
