F that guy, mailbomb the douche. Terrorism aside I really hope you sort it out and get your picture removed from his site. You own it and he shouldn't display it like that.

Ah, so you do have a website. Thanks for sharing. Try watermarking over the center of the image next time instead of leaving it off or put in the lower right corner where it is easily cropped out.

it's simple, "photography" is high ranking keyword. There is another of my image, girls face, #6 in google images, and it gives insane traffic. If I took my place with the gun image #2, I would get more traffic. got it?

images are from here:
http://www.sandrophoto.com/2007/11/24/photo-headers/ (external link)

unfortunately google has yet to scan the content of pictures, its crawler scans a site and collect the meta tags, pictures description given. so even if he removes your pictures and replace it another picture with the same file name and description, he will still come on top of search result for the keyword "photography".

to get on top of google's search result you have to work on optimizing your website for search engine, in short do some SEO works on your site. i bet that is why that site came on top. also while optimizing targeting a key word like "gun photography" will be more effective than a broad keyword like "photography".

i am sure here there are some seo gurus who can explain the process better.

I have had many photo's hotlinked to other sites. I took a picture of my Treo 650 smart phone years ago and it ended up in the product catalog section of 4 wireless resellers over seas. What I did was change the image to a not so safe for work image. Because they hotlinked it my image was on their page. I was not heavily opposed to them using these pictures they were just shots of my phone that I posted to a blog post review I did on the phone. What I did not like was they were leeching bandwidth.

Once you post something on the internet and other folks like it.. they will use it and abuse it.

You could also try e-mailing Google and see if they'll do anything about it.

Having that photo stolen probably has nothing to do with any perceived loss of traffic. Looking at your site meta data is just telling. While they dont strictly rely on keywords any more, your OVER use of the Photography and its variations has probably been your detriment.

"description" content="In search of information about famous photographers from yesteryear or today? Be awed and inspired by our featured collection of the worlds most renown photographers." /><meta name="keywords" content="famous photographer, famous portrait photographers, famous fashion photographers, names of famous photographers, most famous photographers, famous sports photographers, famous photographers and their works, famous photographs, famous female photographers, famous landscape photographers, famous nature photographers, list of famous photographers, world famous photographers, famous war photographers, most famous photographs, world famous photographs, national geographic photographers, biography of a photographer"

Besides watermarking, you might want to put your copyright information in the photograph meta data. While it can be removed, most stealers don't think of or know how to do that.

All very well put. An image coming up often on one person/company's website will not get the same search hit results with that same image on a different website. Showing up in web searches is not just the image and the search tags associated with that. And how popular a website is, contributes to its ranking with Google. So putting a popular image on a low SEO ranking/Google search return website (even with good SEO search works) will not make that low ranked website jump near the top in google searches for those same words!

One other thing I noticed is that the OP's pictures on the web site have zero meta data - no copyright nor owner ship info embedded. Also, you make it way to easy for those crooks to download your photos for their own illegal purposes.

If I were you I would pursue legal action - if you can prove ownership of those photos that is. Again, you may have a problem here, because you published them in a public domain without copyright info embedded.

Just my two cents.
