You guys aren't helpng my 24-70 versus 50L decision I've been trying to make the past week. On one hand, I think I would like the versatility of the 24-70, but the majority of my shots will be of the baby come June, friends and family with a few portrait shoots in between. I keep telling myself, if I need wider or longer, what's one step forward or backward. :p I am trying to convince myself I will absolutely love the 50L. I've made it such a point that I've been using my 50 1.8 for a month now exclusively just to make sure that focal length works for me and I've yet to find it a problem. In fact, I find it pretty natural. I would just have to crop some pics to get close ups of baby toes and baby fingers. :D

thanks for the compliment, Brandon.

I like the 50mm focal length on a crop, and the 50 1.2 blows the nifty fifty out of the water: the difference in DOF between 1.2 and 1.8 is bigger than I thought it would be, not to mention the AF capabilities. I use the 1.2 on my 400D(my 2nd body) for weddings and AF was superb. I've gotten keepers in badly lit situations whereas I wouldn't have bothered if I was using the nifty fifty.

If you use the nifty fifty happily with regard to its focal lenght, then go on buy the 50L. The 24-70 is versatile. But if you know that you mostly shoot 50 mm, then there is no doubt you will be happier with the 50L. The image quality is insane even compared with 24-70. Also its IQ is far better in my world than the 24-70.

a 50mm is pretty much 80mm on a crop, so your in effect, you're almost getting an 85L

you could always rent a 50L just to see whether or not it is truly for you. As you mentioned, you already use the 50mm 1.8 with a natural flow. Also rent the 24-70 and give that a try if you haven't already, just so you can compare for yourself instead of relying on people's opinions.

keep in mind the 24-70 would become 38-112mm

oops sorry  someone had mentioned a crop body, and I assumed it was referring to yours.

in any case, rent the 24-70 if you haven't already had some time with one. That will make up your mind.
