SEAL ROCK
Well, I have only been out once this year so far for serious photo trip.
So far this year, this is my favorite shot. Hopes for many more this year that I can add to my favorite shots list.
Taken in Northern AZ, on Navajo Land. This is a long exposure night shot, converted to B/W. Someone on POTN called this "SEAL ROCK" The name certainly fits.

Magnificent rock formation! It really works well in B&W. Where in northern Arizona is this? On a reservation? It doesn't look familiar to me.

@Shawnwc- What lens and settings did you use to obtain that picture? i've tried capturing stars a few times with basically no success. they just dont show up, even when i set my shutter speed to 10secs. granted i don't have an L lens in my collection yet, so if thats all it is then i would be happy as i'm getting one soonish.

Off to a slow start this year, I know. But just testing out my newly-acquired Lumix LX-5 here.

Regarding SEAL ROCK, how did you stop the stars trailing?

I was fine as long as I kept the shutter under 30 seconds.

I shot this with Canon 5D, 24-70 f2.8L, wide open to f2.8, ISO 320, set my shutter 15sec. The L lens is not what I needed, just Practice, patience, & experiment with your settings. An 18-55 f3.5 could pull these off. I was anywhere from 3sec to 25 & 30sec on some of the nite shots. You will want to have a remote trigger, We did have a guy setting his timer since he didn't have a trigger with him. Getting the light to your sensor is the key.

Thank you, The color was OK but I thought the B/W worked well on this too.
This was on the res outside Tuba City area.

Another veiw of Seal Rock, Some pretty good stars in this one. The Light on the Large rock is compliments of our campfire. This one is ISO 320 f4, 30seconds

Yep, that's my rule of thumb also (with wide angle lens)... under 30 seconds is fine :)

Not like 281 seconds for my "Valley" LOL

@Shawnc- So when you set the shutter open that long do yo use the mirror lock function as well? i noticed you said to use a trigger to trip the shutter, i assume this is so you dont get the slight motion in the camera of depressing the shutter. is this correct?
